- Summary
Our Road Services Division, Maintenance Section, is currently recruiting for a Carpenter II. This position is responsible for planning and supervising the work of carpenters, utility workers, truck drivers, operators, electricians and vendors in the construction, repair and maintenance of equipment, guardrails, sidewalks, handrails, fences, buildings, seawalls, and bridge structures.
This recruitment process will be used to create an eligibility list that will be used to fill Carpenter II positions such as regular career service, Special Duty, term-limited temporary (TLT), and short-term temporary positions.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
King County is the local service provider for the roughly quarter-million people who live in the unincorporated areas of the county; taken together, Unincorporated King County would be the second-largest city in the state. The Department of Local Services includes a Director's Office with a Community Service Area group, and the Road Services and Permitting Divisions. Together, this department provides a single executive point of accountability for delivery of local services to all of the unincorporated areas.
The King County Road Services Division designs, builds, operates and maintains roads and bridges in unincorporated areas of King County in an efficient and environmentally responsible manner to protect the public's investment and facilitate safe travel. The division is committed to ensuring the county's transportation system is safe and efficient for all uses and modes of travel. The Division is responsible for 1,500 miles of road and 182 bridges, 5.7 million feet of drainage ditches, over 44,000 traffic control signs, 78 traffic signals, and 50 traffic cameras in unincorporated King County.
WHO MAY APPLY: This recruitment is open to all qualified candidates. First consideration will be given to current King County Career Service employees eligible for lateral transfer. To be eligible for lateral transfer, you must be a Career Service Carpenter II represented by Local Union 30 of the Joint Crafts Council representing Construction Craft Employees.
WORK SCHEDULE: Monday – Friday; 8hr/day, 40hr/week. During the summer months, schedule is Monday – Thursday; 10hr/day. This position is non-exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible. Working extended shifts, after-hours, mandatory overtime, weekends, call-outs, and holidays may be required in emergency circumstances, such as during inclement weather and/or on special projects. Overtime hours, weekends, and holidays vary upon business demand, season and weather.

The Carpenter II is responsible for "Journey" level expertise of the carpentry trade, with an emphasis in the repair and maintenance of bridge structures. The incumbent will be relied upon to identify bridge issues and relay concerns to engineers, as well as directing crews to make the proper repairs to the structure. The incumbent will also be responsible for scheduling, coordinating, designing, planning, estimating and Leading other carpenters, utility workers, truck drivers, operators, electricians and vendors within the unit.
Applicants must have skills, knowledge and abilities in the following areas to be considered competitive:
- Lead carpenters and other workers in construction, repairing, altering or maintaining equipment, sidewalks, guardrails, fences, handrails, buildings, seawalls, and bridge structures.
- Plan and organize crew work activities. Ensure that required material and equipment are available to perform work.
- Provide onsite monitoring, direction, and correction of work performance and assistance to work crews.
- Ensures that work crews comply with safety rules and regulations (e.g., OSHA/WISHA)
- Ensure that work crews comply with environmental standards, codes, regulations, and specifications.
- Monitor job site safety, identifying safety hazards and unsafe practices; correct problems or recommend corrective action when problems are identified.
- Monitor work quality and quantity, and participate in the selection of new employees. Coordinate work requests, produce time and material estimates; organize and request labor, materials and equipment to complete projects. Perform record-keeping (daily logs). Document maintenance and repairs on work orders.
- Order equipment, materials and tools and approve purchasing.
- Coordinate with Project Engineers, and understand and effectively follow oral and written instructions to include blueprints, supervisor and engineering notes.
- Ability to make modifications to initial plans based on changing conditions.
- Safely work at heights up to 50+ feet; set up work sites to ensure safe working conditions per OSHA and WISHA requirements. Safely use ladders, lifts, rigging, barricades, PPE, and safety harnesses to remain safe on the jobsite and protect the general public.
- Safely use hand and power tools; such as drills, saws, sanders, routers, welders etc. Maintain a variety of carpentry hand and power tools for use on the jobsite and in shop.
- Safely use Pneumatic and Hydraulic tools, working with wood, concrete and steel.
- Coordinate with contractors and outside service vendors.
- Participate in inclement weather and emergency response situations as needed.
- Must be available for mandatory overtime as needed and to perform other duties as assigned.

- Demonstrated journeymen level employment in the trade which includes prior verifiable experience in carpentry.
- Ability to identify bridge issues and various points of interest.
- Knowledge of the basic principles of leadership
- Thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, materials and tools of the carpentry trade.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary in the carpentry trade.
- Ability to effectively lead a team that contributes to a work environment that embraces and encourages diversity in its workforce and where differences are valued.

- Knowledge and skill identifying maintenance problems and resolving issues.
- Skill in planning, laying out, training and directing the work of carpenters and workers.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT(S):
- Possession of a valid Washington state driver's license.
- An offer of employment will be contingent on the success of a pre-employment physical examination.
- Candidate must obtain King County's CPR and Flagging Certification within the first 90 days of employment.
