Chief of Electronics Shop (Vehicle Maintenance)
- Summary
This position is considered safety sensitive. Applicants for positions defined as safety sensitive are required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and, subsequent to commencement of employment, will be subject to random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing in compliance with Federal DOT alcohol and controlled substances testing program protocols.
Vehicle Maintenance Division
Metro Transit's Vehicle Maintenance Division takes pride in meeting our customers' expectations for safe, dependable, clean, and environmentally sound vehicles. Maintenance of Metro's bus fleet takes place at seven bus bases and at our central Component Supply Center where specialized work is done. The majority of Metro's buses are hybrids, followed by diesel, electric trolley, and several battery-electric buses. Metro has long been an innovator in green vehicle technology, and plans to transition to battery-electric buses as we move toward our goal of a zero-emission fleet. King County Transit is accepting applications for the following Transit Chief positions:- Chief of Electronics Shop (Vehicle Maintenance – One Career Service position.
This position will supervise and coordinate the maintenance and repair of electronic equipment and devices used in the motor coach and trolley coach fleet. This includes preparation of labor and material cost estimates for electronic equipment maintenance, maintaining inventory of materials, supplies and shop equipment as well as supervision and management of shop personnel divided over two different physical locations.

Work schedule: This position is not overtime eligible. Typical work hours are between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Employees may be required to work extended hours and weekend and holidays.

- Job Duties
- Assign and supervise the maintenance and repair of electronic components used in the motor and trolley coach fleet including, but not limited to, SCR control systems, electronic signage, programmable control systems, transmission logic systems and all other electronic components as required.
- Plan, schedule, coordinate, supervise, evaluate and create the work and performance standards of the section's staff.
- Provide for training and development
- Schedule and review work of the section to best utilize personnel and meet production needs in an economic and timely manner.
- Prioritize work requests, inspect work progress, completion and quality.
- Conduct performance evaluations, interview job applicants and perform other supervisory functions as required.
- Evaluate alternatives, make recommendations and prepare cost estimates of labor and material for electronic systems maintenance work.
- Ensure that safety procedures, tools, equipment and facilities are maintained properly in order to provide a safe and efficient work environment.
- Maintain accurate records for electronic maintenance, timekeeping, personnel and other related matters. Prepare reports on the section's activities as required. Prepare section budget, including projections for future personnel and equipment needs.
- Participate in special projects as requested; such as On Board Systems, Smart Card, WiFi, bus cameras and other projects.
- Write equipment specifications and justifications for capital equipment purchases. Work with outside vendors to procure required parts and equipment.
- Work with desktop PC as needed in MS Word, Excel, M5 or other fleet management software.

- Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

- An Associate's degree in Electronic Engineering with a heavy mathematical emphasis or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Four years of journey-level electronic work experience is required with two years in a lead or supervisory capacity.
- Working knowledge of basic electronic design, current industry practice and state-of-the-art electronics.
- Working knowledge of workforce planning to prioritize electronic work and schedule section's workload to best utilize personnel to meet production needs in an efficient and timely manner.
- Working knowledge of supervisory and management techniques.
- Basic knowledge of preparing and making recommendations to budget requirements.
- Knowledge of appropriate Federal, State and Local regulations related to safety and the electronics field, (such as FCC regulations, OSHA, applicable WAC and RCW codes, etc).
- Excellent oral and written communication skills. The position has frequent contacts with other personnel to coordinate electronic repair work and installation and to exchange technical information, (schematics, CAD). Outside of King County, contacts are with sales representatives, vendors, Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) and other transit property personnel to exchange technical information. Will work closely with Bases Chiefs to assure adequate workgroup support.
- Demonstrated skill in establishing effective teams and overcoming obstacles, difficulties and differing personalities and styles to effectively, reliably and efficiently deliver quality service.
- Demonstrated skill in preparing cost estimates of labor and materials for electronic systems maintenance work, as well as evaluating alternatives and making appropriate recommendations.
- Demonstrated skill in writing equipment specifications and justifications for capital equipment purchases.
- Proficient level of skill in Microsoft Word, Excel and M5 or other fleet management software.
- Ability to effectively manage a relatively static workgroup in a Union environment with varying levels of seniority among staff.
- Ability to manage a workforce divided in to two physical locations, serving nine Vehicle Maintenance facilities.
- College-level courses in Solid and Plane Geometry and Calculus
- Coursework in supervision and/or management
- Transportation-related work experience
- Valid Washington State Driver's License or alternate ability to travel to locations for which public transportation is not regularly available.

Selection Process: Candidates who demonstrate clearly through their application materials how they meet and/or exceed the minimum qualifications and ideal candidate profile will be invited to participate in first round panel interviews. Candidates who pass the first round interview process will advance to final interviews.
First Round of interviews are scheduled for the weeks of September 9th – September 20th.
Final Round of interviews are scheduled for September 30th – October 11th.
You must be available to on these dates if selected. Skype options are available for out-of-state candidates for the first-round interview only. Final interviews must be in person. We unfortunately not able to provide interviewing or relocation expenses.
The most competitive candidates from the final interview process will proceed to reference checks and a record review. Final offers of employment will be subject to successful completion of the reference check and record review process.
