These Career Service (permanent) positions are open to the public and all King County employees. In addition to filling five career service vacancies, this recruitment will also be used to fill several 2-year Term-Limited positions, as well as, may be used to create an eligibility list for future career service and/or term-limited temporary positions. Schedule and Work Location
As a Sheet Metal Worker in the Vehicle Maintenance section, you may be assigned to one of several maintenance locations throughout King County and work one of three shifts (day, swing and graveyard), Monday through Friday. Openings may occur on all shifts. Swing and graveyard shift employees receive hourly additional pay of 5% (swing) or 7.5% (graveyard). Employees work a 40 hour per week schedule and are eligible for overtime with supervisory approval. Work schedules and locations are based on a seniority "pick" system, which occurs three times a year. If hired, you must be able and willing to work any shift, at any location.

- Perform auto body repairs on vehicles involving sheet metal layout, template making and fabricating, and repairing metal and fiberglass body sections.
- Cut, form, weld, rivet, and braze metals in repairing and fabricating body and equipment sections working from blueprints, sketches, and instructions.
- Repair and replace various vehicle parts of non-metal materials including glass, cloth, wood, plastic, rubber, and fiberglass.
- Make minor repairs to electrical wiring when removing or replacing marker lights, head lights, tail lights, and interior lights.
- Repair body sections and parts of damaged transit coaches involving sheet metal and other related structural work and perform priming of same to prevent contamination/ corrosion. Perform sheet metal repair work on equipment and facilities such as, garage doors, passenger shelters and other immobile objects.
- Set up and operate metal, glass, and wood working equipment such as shears, brakes, rollers, grinders, saws, jacks, punches, folders, drills, sanders, gas and electric welders and frame straightening equipment. Assist other repair units in performing repair and mechanical work.
- Computer tasks inputting and extracting data using a computer terminal.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
At A Minimum To Qualify For This Position You Will Need:
Journey-level experience and knowledge of sheet metal repairs and structural maintenance Work including at least one year of experience in fiberglass fabrication and repair. Knowledge of and experience using all related specialized equipment including but not limited to:- Heavy Duty Frame Straightening Machines, Plasma Cutters, Power Sheet Metal Notcher, Power Tube Notcher, Press Brake, Power Sheet Metal Shear, Specialized Glass Lifting Device and Blackhawk/Port-power Power Posts.
In addition, you must meet one the following qualifications:
Four years of automotive body repair experience
OR
A combination of a two-year automotive repair community college program and two years of automotive body repair experience
OR
Completion of a two-year automotive body repair apprenticeship program and two years of automotive body repair experience
OR
Any combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position
Desirable Qualifications:
The most competitive candidates will be those applicants with documented experience in: Accident/Damage repair of heavy equipment such as passenger coaches, trucks, etc. Knowledge of sheet metal fabrication, layout, and bench work and experience in composite fabrication and repairs.
Physical Requirements:
The job requires considerable physical skill and sustained periods of physical effort. Frequent lifting or carrying of welding and cutting tools weighing up to 50 pounds is required. Lifting and carrying, with assistance, metal, wood, equipment and other objects weighing up to 100 pounds is also required.
Necessary Special Requirement:
Within 90 days of hire, candidate mu st be able to obtain a Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a passenger endorsement with air brake restriction removed. (Training is provided by Metro).- Supplemental Information
Selection Process:
Applications will be screened for content and completeness and to determine whether candidates meet minimum qualifications. The most competitive candidates may be invited to participate in a skills test and panel interview. Those who interview successfully will be processed for hire or may be placed on an eligibility list for placement into vacancies as they occur, at the discretion of Metro. We will do our first screening of applicants at the closing date. The posting might remain open longer to build a larger selection of applicants.
Once a conditional offer of employment has been made, a final offer will require passing
all requirements outlined for safety sensitive positions, which will include an acceptable driving record, satisfactory reference checks, receipt of two-year drug testing background checks from your previous employers, pre-employment drug screen and a physical examination.
