WORK SCHEDULE: This position is part time and may work up to 15 hours per week. Day to day schedule will be arranged at time of hire.
The Medical Examiner's Office is looking to for an intern to be able to provide support to the Drug Abuse Fatality Research Project at the Medical Examiner's Office. This position is expected to work up to 15 hours per week and can last up to 36 months. Primary duties include preparing and testing samples for drugs, entering data into a drug surveillance database in Access and supporting the development of weekly bulletins for law enforcement and public health. The work is conducted in coordination with a team including Forensic Pathology staff and Medicolegal Death Investigators. Data collected will be shared with partnering law enforcement, investigative and public health agencies.
WHO MAY APPLY: This part time internship position is only open to undergraduate, graduate and post graduate students.
WORK LOCATION: This position will primarily work at the Ninth and Jefferson Building located at 908 Jefferson St. Seattle, WA 98114.

- Perform data collection, entry and analysis.
- Fluent in, or able to quickly learn Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and other programs as deemed necessary.
- Assist in developing and maintaining a comprehensive drug overdose surveillance database.
- Perform field testing on suspected drug substances.
- Learn user-level use of the medical examiner data management system.
- Prepare, type, store and file case materials such as toxicology reports and other drug surveillance testing reports.
- Prepare and deliver presentations to partner agencies.
- Scan records and case files for archiving.
- Operate the Randox MultiSTAT analyzer to test blood for the presence of drugs.
- Test suspected drug material using field testing kits and devices.
- Update weekly reports with information from drug overdose surveillance database.
- Align with the mission of the work related to Criminal Justice.
- File protected medical information documents.
- Attend team meetings to identify information relevant to the drug surveillance project.
- Prepare investigative results.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Ability to use or rapidly learn to use Access for database management
- Ability to follow protocol for safe drug testing
- Ability to follow protocol related to blood borne pathogen safety
- Ability to work effectively on a team
- Excellent communications in writing and verbally
- Demonstrated reliability in attendance
- Current undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate student
