Juvenile Probation Counselor - Lead
- Summary
This position performs the general duties of a Juvenile Probation Counselor: assesses, supervises and counsels clients in the juvenile justice system prior to and following disposition of juvenile offender charges. Assists in managing the day to day office operations in the unit supervisor's absence and provides specialized services to youth and their families.

Work schedule and terms: This full-time position is hourly and overtime-eligible. The incumbent will work 40 hours per week. The workweek is normally Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Hours of work may vary.

- Job Duties
The following duties are not intended to represent the entire functional capacity of the position at the task level:
Performs the duties of a Juvenile Probation Counselor including such tasks as conducting risk assessments, developing treatment plans, and making recommendations to the Court and Probation Services for a modified case load. Attends meetings as required.
Assists in the coordination, management and delivery of specialized youth services programs such as evidence based and best practice models.
Oversees the work of student interns assigned to Juvenile Court. Assigns cases on the basis of workload, competence and interest. Reviews work performance and meets with students regularly.
Serves as liaison for the Court, other County agencies and contracted service providers.
Prepares written materials including month-end reports, meeting notes, and correspondence.
Provides consultation and training to other staff, students and volunteers as needed.
While serving in the supervisor absence, assigns cases and reviews cases for closure; responds to and resolves daily requests for information, and resolves emergency situations. Acts as a liaison to the Juvenile Court Services Manager as required.- Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in psychology, criminal justice, social work, counseling or related field and two (2) years of experience as a Juvenile Probation Counselor, one year of which may be substituted with a Master's degree in a related field.
Demonstrated ability to work with youth and families from various socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. Must have knowledge of counseling theories and methods, and skill in interviewing techniques. Knowledge of community resources, adolescent and child development required. Experience in computer software application including word processing and database management required.
Working knowledge of Case Management Assessment Process (CMAP), Positive Achievement Change Tool (PACT) and motivational interviewing is preferred. Knowledge of court operations procedures and processes preferred.- Supplemental Information
Special requirements: Finalists must have successfully passed a criminal background investigation, including a polygraph examination and reference check. A valid Washington State Driver's license or be able to travel throughout the County by alternate means.
