Line Worker Helper
- Summary
This position is considered safety sensitive. Applicants for positions defined as safety sensitive are required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and, subsequent to hire, will be subject to random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty, and follow up drug and alcohol testing in compliance with federal DOT alcohol and controlled substances testing program protocols.
Job Summary
Assist journey-level trolley overhead line crew and/or electrician constructors in the repair, maintenance, and construction of transit power distribution electrical systems and high voltage trolley overhead systems.

This position is open to the general public and all King County employees.
This recruitment will be used to fill Five career service vacancy and may be used to create an eligibility list of qualified candidates for future career service, Term-Limited-Temporary (TLT) and Special Duty vacancies that may occur. Eligibility lists are valid for twelve months, or until exhausted, at the discretion of the hiring authority.

Work Schedule
This position is eligible for overtime pay if scheduled. Employees must be available to work any one of four shifts, including a graveyard shift expected to be implemented soon, to cover all staffing needs. Staffing will cover 24 hours/week, seven days a week, every day of the year. Shift picks occur once a year by seniority. Management reserves the right to assign any shift in order to meet the needs of the work unit.

- Load and unload tools, materials and equipment from trucks.

- Inspect and hand equipment and materials to line crew workers repairing underground or overhead power lines.
- Assist crew workers in trimming trees, shoveling dirt and gravel, and other tasks required in setting up line poles.
- Assist crew workers in the installation and maintenance of the Trolley Overhead system.
- Direct street and pedestrian traffic around repair sites; provide flagging and other traffic control duties.
- Alert crew workers of potential hazards such as high trucks that could hit tower deck or oncoming trolleys.
- May operate line trucks in absence of a line material worker.
- Respond to emergency repair calls during non-working hours as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications
All applicants must have a Class B CDL (Commercial Driver's License) at the time of application, and if their CDL is from a different state, must obtain their WA State CDL by date of hire. Additional requirements are:
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with electrical trades.
- Skill in the use and care of related tools, machinery and equipment.
- Skill in operating associated types of power tools, machinery and equipment.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team; ability to interact appropriately with others.
- Ability to demonstrate predictable, reliable, and timely attendance.
- Demonstrated ability to read, write, and follow verbal instructions.
- Demonstrated ability to drive in a safe and responsible manner.
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience or demonstrated ability to work in and around high voltage equipment under the direction of journey-level line crew workers and/or electrician constructors
- Current Washington State Flagger and First Aid Certifications
Necessary Special Requirements
- Candidates who do not have a Washington State Flagger Certification, Forklift Operator Certification and First Aid Certification will receive training and paid time to obtain them, and must do so within six months of hire.
Physical Requirements and Working Environment
This position requires the ability to run a hand line, shovel dirt and gravel, assist in raising poles, jump trolleys and lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds (up to 100 pounds with assistance). Work is performed outside in all weather conditions and requires exposure to traffic and high voltage wires. Successful candidates will be required to wear Arc Flash uniforms, category 2 daily and up to category 4 as needed. Metro provides the uniforms.- Supplemental Information

Selection Process
Applications will be screened to determine whether candidates meet minimum qualifications. Note: Candidates without a current Class B CDL and experience or demonstrated ability to work in and around high voltage equipment as described above will be screened out.
Candidates presenting evidence that they meet or exceed the qualifications noted above may be invited to participate in a panel interview. Employment offers will be finalized only after candidates have successfully completed physical examinations, drug screens and a drug and alcohol background checks. Reference checks and reviews of driving records will also be conducted prior to any final offer of employment.
