Marine Deckhand
- Summary
The King County Marine Division operates and maintains the King County Water Taxis and Facilities serving Vashon Island/Downtown Seattle and West Seattle/Downtown Seattle routes of the King County Water Taxi.
Currently, the Division is seeking to establish an immediate pool of on-call temporary (not benefits eligible), Term Limited Temporary (benefits eligible), and career service Marine Deckhands to supplement the current workforce and help staff shifts as needed. Those who interview successfully may be used to generate an eligibility list to fill future career service positions and[ term-limited temporary vacancies that may occur in the next 12 months. Those accepting Term Limited, Short Term Temporary, or Special Duty assignments may be given first consideration for future career service opportunities.All positions are represented by the Inland boatmen's Union of the Pacific; wages and conditions are established by a collective bargaining labor agreement.

WORK LOCATION: The reporting work location may be either the downtown Seattle passenger only ferry terminal at Pier 50, or the Moorage and Maintenance Facility at Pier 48.

- Job Duties
The responsibilities of the Marine Deckhand include assisting the Captain and/or engineers with vessel startup and shutdown, raising and lowering passenger loading ramps, handling mooring lines, loading and unloading passengers, standing watch while underway, performing safety and security functions, performing general maintenance and cleaning duties to vessels and facilities, and being prepared to respond to emergencies aboard the ferryboat or at the terminals. This position supports the county's interest in ensuring a quality customer experience in the operation and delivery of ferry services.
- Assist passengers in boarding and departing the ferry; ensure passenger safety; answer questions and provide information.
- Handle mooring lines; cast off lines upon embarking and secure lines upon docking.
- Perform basic deck and vessel cleaning and maintenance functions; keep decks clean and free of debris and ice; light maintenance such as removing and preparing surfaces for non-skid application and painting deck surfaces such as superstructure and railings of vessel; clean vessel furnishings, decks, restrooms, bulkheads, overheads, windows, baseboard heaters, and vessel exterior as needed; empty vessel trash and separate items for recycling.
- Perform lookout watches, and other navigational assignments as directed by the Captain; conduct regular passenger and vessel safety and security sweeps as well as engine room rounds while underway and as required by the Captain.
- Move passenger loading ramps into place and control entry and exit of passengers.
- Ensure all entering passengers have paid the appropriate fare; observe appropriate use of electronic fare media; operate portable fare transaction processor (PFTP), assist passengers with cash payments and use of fare box; count and record number of passengers, fare media used, and cash payments.
- Assist in fueling operations and replenishment of the vessel supplies.
- Participate in all required training and drills; perform all applicable emergency procedures.
- Understand proper use of all safety and emergency equipment, including fire extinguishers, vessel firefighting systems, life rafts, life preservers, life rings and water lights; ensure each item is maintained in working order.
- May be required to take over operation of the ferry to bring the vessel into port if the Captain is incapacitated.

LICENSING AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess a valid United States Coast Guard (USCG) Merchant Mariner's Document (MMD) or Merchant Mariner's Credential (MMC) with minimum rating of Ordinary Seaman (OS). Able Body Seaman (AB) rating is preferred.
- Must possess a valid Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
DESIRABLE LICENSES AND TRAINING:
- USCG rating on your MMD or MMC at the AB level
- Certification in Fire Safety Training and Life Saving Training
- Satisfactory completion of the training and experience necessary to qualify as a Senior Deckhand in compliance with USCG Navigation and Vessel Circular (NVIC) No. 1-91
