The Solid Waste Division of King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks is looking for a Heavy Duty Mechanic II in their Operations Section who will be responsible for oversight of maintenance activities and repairs of the heavy duty and related equipment. This is a special duty opportunity that may last six (6) months with a possibility of extension for eligible King County employees.
The job duties of this position requires working on a variety of mechanical, electrical, electronic, powertrain and hydraulic systems for vehicles, on and off construction equipment, portable and stationary equipment, gasoline and diesel powered vehicles at the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill in the Operations Section of King County's Solid Waste Division.

WORK LOCATION: Primary work location is Cedar Hills Regional Landfill located at 16645 228th Ave SE, Maple Valley, WA 98038.
WORK SCHEDULE: This position works a 40-hour workweek and is overtime eligible with Supervisor approval. This position may be required to work alternative work schedules to support core service hours. Service hours are weekdays 6 a.m.-11 p.m., and weekends 6 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Evening and weekend work may be required.
OPERATIONS SECTION PROFILE: The operations section of the Solid Waste Division operates a solid waste transfer and disposal system for residents and businesses in King County (except for Milton and Seattle). The operations section is responsible for the transfer facilities, transportation, maintenance shop (maintaining the division's heavy equipment, vehicles and facilities), landfill operations, landfill gas and wastewater. Commercial garbage collection companies and self-haulers (business and residential) bring solid waste to the transfer facilities, where it is located into large transfer trailers and hauled to the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill for disposal. At the landfill, a network of environmental controls ensures the by-products of the decomposing waste are captured and managed.

EXAMPLES OF JOB DUTIES:
• Conducting continual technical inspection of heavy vehicles and equipment daily and weekly to identify pro-active maintenance activities and repairs.
• Monitoring of progress and completed repairs to ensure equipment readiness for internal customers.
• Work with Shop Lead to back-fill any short term technician needs due to unforeseen absences.
• Be an active contributor in tools, personnel and training needs.
• Create work orders and related documents in the Faster database using laptop.
• Administer communications related to transportation as needed in coordination with Shop and Transportation Leads.
• Monitor repair equipment time entries and review for accuracy in the Faster database system.
• Monitor and track the general production and performance of work completed in the shop.
• Work closely and collaboratively with the work unit supervisor(s), other members of authority, Transfer Station Operators (TSO), etc.
• Provide technical assistance and advice to employees in the work unit.
• Create and maintain a high level of open communication between internal customers and the shop.
• Other duties as assigned.
OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
• Five (5) years of oversight experience in the performance of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic overhaul and repair work on light and heavy vehicles, tractors, mowers, trailers, backhoes, loaders, and other construction, maintenance, wastewater related equipment and other mechanical-related equipment.
• Journey status in heavy duty construction equipment, diesel and medium fleet automotive repair and maintenance.
• Experience with troubleshooting engine, electrical and hydraulic systems for proper operation of integral or installed systems and proper maintenance.
• Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
• Demonstrated knowledge working with equipment monitoring & tracking database system.
• Experience in business communications (oral and written).
• A strong and positive communicator.
• Demonstrated knowledge with using work email and computer.
THE MOST COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
• Three (3) years of experience in the Solid Waste Division equipment maintenance and repair.
• Demonstrated knowledge working with FASTER database system.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Possession of a valid Washington State Driver's License.
• Possession of a valid Washington State Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with current Medical Card upon hire or the ability to obtain such License within six (6) months of employment.
• Successful candidate must provide his or her own tool kit consisting of standard and metric, open end and socket wrenches. Open end wrenches must be standard size 1/4" through 1-1/4", metric size 6 mm through 22 mm. Socket sets 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" drive, standard size 1/4" through 1-1/4", metric size 6 mm through 22 mm. Various pliers, screwdrivers and other hand tools required to perform the essential function of the job must be part of the kit.
• Successful candidate must obtain First Aid and CPR certification within six (6) months after start of employment.
• Successful candidate will be required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and, subsequent to commencement of employment, will be subject to random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty and follow up testing as position is defined as safety sensitive.
• Successful candidate will be required to pass a physical examination.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful drug testing, physical examination, supervisory level reference checks, verification of a valid Washington State Driver's License, and valid Washington State Class B Commercial Driver's License with current Medical Card.
