The Operating Engineer (HVAC Technician) is responsible for performing skilled day-to-day operation, inspections, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of facility heating, ventilation and air conditioning and related building systems and controls. Our facilities are both modernized and older with an age range from 2 – 50 years, with equipment such as boilers, DDC controls, ventilation fans, pumps, compressors, dust collection, and fire/life/safety systems.
NOTE: Classification determination (i.e. Operating Engineer I or II) is dependent upon Collective Bargaining Agreement, International Union of Operating Engineers Local 286.
Hourly rate range is as follows: Operating Engineer I $29.7812 - $36.0032 and Operating Engineer II $33.5306 - $40.5359.WHO MAY APPLY: This position is open to all qualified applicants. The Solid Waste Division is recruiting to fill one (1) Career Service position. WORK LOCATION: Primary work location is Cedar Hills Regional Landfill located at 16645 228th Ave SE, Maple Valley, WA 98038 with various locations throughout King County, WA.WORK SCHEDULE: This position works a 40-hour workweek; 5 x 8 Monday through Friday 5:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., is non-exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible.
OPERATIONS SECTION PROFILE: The Operations section of the Solid Waste Division operates a solid waste transfer and disposal system for residents and businesses in King County (except for Milton, Seattle). The Operations section is responsible for the transfer facilities, transportation, maintenance shop (maintaining the Division's heavy equipment, vehicles and facilities), landfill operations, landfill gas and wastewater. Commercial garbage collection companies and self-haulers (business and residential) bring solid waste to the transfer facilities, where it is located into large transfer trailers and hauled to the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill for disposal. At the landfill, a network of environmental controls ensures the byproducts of the decomposing waste are captured and managed.

EXAMPLE OF JOB DUTIES:
• Monitor, maintain and repair direct digital controls (DDC).
• Monitor and repair heating and air-conditioning equipment using computerized console controls.
• Make adjustments necessary to compensate for temperature change or equipment failure.
• Inspect and adjust water levels, steam pressures, lubricants, coolants, drive belt and bearing operation, filters, etc., to ensure proper equipment operation.
• Perform preventive maintenance on large commercial heating and cooling systems and controls for those systems.
• Adjust and calibrate large commercial heating and cooling systems and controls for those systems.
• Conduct refrigeration maintenance and service.
• Timely and accurate documentation of work in Faster system.
• Perform other duties as assigned.REQUIRED SKILLS:
• Minimum two (2) years of experience, and demonstrated ability in operating, troubleshooting and repairing large-scale industrial, heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment, including boilers and pneumatic/digital (DDC) control systems.
• Experience in solving customer service issues with tact and diplomacy, and ability to work with a broad and diverse customer base.
• Knowledge of the products, materials, equipment and tools related to the industry.
• Knowledge of applied mathematics.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Experience in reading and interpreting blueprints
• Experience evaluating and troubleshooting electrical and mechanical problems.NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Valid Washington State Driver's License or the ability to travel throughout King County in a timely manner in a variety of County vehicles.
• Possession of Grade #3 Steam Engineer License and Refrigeration Operating Engineer License or the ability to obtain such Licenses within twelve (12) months, as a condition of continued employment.
• Valid Washington State Journey Electrician (01) Certificate
• Universal Environmental Protection Agency Technician CertificationPHYSICAL REQUIREMENT: The position requires physical labor including, but not limited to, standing, walking, sitting, climbing, bending/stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching. The ability to lift, carry, move, or handle up to 50 pounds. The candidate must have the ability to work inside/outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, inclement weather while on uneven slopes, surfaces, grades and terrain and other adverse conditions such as odor, noise, dust and traffic.
Offers of employment will be contingent upon verification of a valid Washington State Driver's License or the ability to travel throughout King County in a timely manner in a variety of County vehicles, proof of possessing other required licenses, clearance of pre-employment physical examination and supervisory level reference checks.
