The Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention's (DAJD) Finance office is seeking a very detailed oriented individual for the position of Payroll Specialist. The primary focus of this position is to ensure timely and accurate payroll processing and providing excellent customer service.

- Process DAJD bi-weekly payroll, through the Roster Management System (RMS) into PeopleSoft, interpreting data and applying appropriate codes; reviewing, analyzing and verifying data to ensure compliance with multiple collective bargaining agreements, King County policies, and State and Federal laws.
- Review and correct code application, apply premium pays, determine appropriate pay type for special leave situations, set up and maintain additional pays and deductions
- Process employee cash out requests; calculate and process manual retirement reporting
- Track and report leave conversions
- Calculate and process retro pays
- Update employee job, personal and payroll information in RMS and PeopleSoft, keeping systems in sync.
- Calculate and track service, class and union seniority date adjustments.
- Perform reconciliations for numerous payroll activities.
- Run PeopleSoft queries; create and maintain spreadsheets for tracking, reconciliation and reporting purposes.
- Review payroll data for accuracy; respond to employee inquiries related to pay, leave and policies, clearly and concisely explaining complex pay transactions.
- Provide payroll expertise and procedural instruction to timekeepers, supervisors and employees.
- Manage incoming documents, identifying high priority and/or time sensitive matters; process Take Home Vehicle reporting, leave donations, requests for verification of employment; assist with contract implementations.
- Report, troubleshoot and document system issues; assist with testing system enhancements/changes.
- Review Personnel Orders to align systems, accounting and position information.
- Conduct New Employee Orientation.
- Perform other duties as assigned within scope and area of assignment.

Desirable candidates will possess:
- A minimum of one (1) year of automated payroll processing experience
- Excellent attention to detail, with demonstrated analytical, problem solving and research skills
- Knowledge of basic accounting and mathematics
- Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize and manage a demanding workload, consistently meeting deadlines with minimal supervision
- Proven ability to effectively and positively work within a team environment, and maintain professionalism in all situations
- Experience providing excellent customer service
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and act with discretion
- Proven ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Demonstrated ability to maintain regular, reliable, and timely attendance
- Proficient skill level with Excel, Microsoft Word and Outlook
- Three years of automated payroll processing experience
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or business administration and/or equivalent education and experience
- Experience with PeopleSoft (or similar software program)

It is a hiring requirement that all staff employed by DAJD successfully pass a thorough background investigation process, which may include any or all of the following: fingerprinting, criminal history check, a polygraph examination, reference checks, and other tests as deemed necessary.
This is a 40-hour per week, overtime eligible position; scheduled to work Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The work space for this position is located in the King County Courthouse (Downtown Seattle, WA). This position is represented by the Public Safety Employees Union, Non-Commissioned Employees.
