Job Summary
Streetcar Operators safely operate the City of Seattle's Streetcar Lines (currently First Hill and South Lake Union) in modern Euro-designed streetcars with enclosed operator cabs. Streetcar Operators work on an established schedule and provide professional customer service.
Safety Sensitive
This position is considered safety sensitive. Applicants for positions defined as safety sensitive are required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and, subsequent to commencement of employment, will be subject to random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing in compliance with Federal DOT alcohol and controlled substances testing program protocols.
Who May Apply
Streetcar Section is currently accepting applications ONLY from current King County METRO full-time and part-time Transit Operators and Rail Operators. Recruitment is not open to the general public. This recruitment will establish a reserve list of qualified Operators for future transfers to streetcar positions. Streetcar operator positions will be offered by seniority to qualified full-time Transit and Rail operators first. Operator Opt Out process is scheduled once each calendar year. The list will remain in effect for twelve months.

Locations
Streetcar Operators may be assigned to either of our two Streetcar locations as a part of the seniority pick system: First Hill (848 7th Ave. S, Seattle) and South Lake Union (318 Fairview Ave. N, Seattle). Extra Board Operators will be assigned to one Location but can be deployed at either one.
Work Schedule
All positions are non-exempt and work a 40-hour workweek. Must be available for day and night work, weekend and holiday work, and split shifts.

- Job Duties
Streetcar operators will operate a streetcar on either the South Lake Union or First Hill Streetcar Line.
- Provide safe, professional, and courteous on-time streetcar service for customers in King County
- Provide passenger customer service including assisting passengers with special needs and in special circumstances, including offering assistance in boarding or de-boarding; providing information to passengers regarding service area, schedules, etc.
- Follow all streetcar rules, policies, and procedures
- Effectively operate transit vehicles and equipment
- Successfully communicate with and follow direction from O&M Supervisors or LINK Control Center via radio
- Communicate effectively with all customers regarding service delays, disruptions, and during emergency situations
- Prepare and submit accident and incident reports; maintain records and other documentation as determined by management
- Perform related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of safe driving techniques and principles for public transportation vehicles
- Knowledge of operating public transportation passenger vehicles
- Knowledge of federal, state and local roadway laws relating to the operation of passenger-carrying motor vehicles
- Skill in preparing and maintaining reports including accident, incident and other reports
- Skill in operating a two-way radio and public address system
- Skill in reading, understanding and following schedules; skill in following oral and written instructions
- Skill in oral and written communications
- Skill in establishing and maintaining courteous and effective relations with the general public and co-workers
- Skill in working with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds

- Supplemental Information
Per the Local 587 contract regarding Streetcar Operator Promotional Lists, if an Employee accepts a Rail Operator or Streetcar Operator position, he or she will be removed from any of the other operator lists (Rail, Streetcar, PTO to FTO) and will be ineligible to apply for any other Operator selection process for a period of six months from the qualification date of the training class he or she accepted.
Training is an intensive six week course that consists of classroom and operating instruction. During the training period, no vacation is allowed. Any already arranged time-off will need to be postponed to a later date.
Attendance at one of the Streetcar Operator Training Information sessions will be mandatory for those who proceed in the selection process. Attendance at the previous set of Familiarization Sessions will count. Information session times and location/directions will be emailed to applicants the day after the closing date. Sessions will be offered on January 3 and January 6. Operators may select which one to attend.
If not immediately needed to fill regular vacancies in Streetcar, Reserve Staff shall return and remain classified as Transit or Light Rail Operators after their certification in Streetcar, and may be used as Reserve Staff as needed, until regular full-time Streetcar Operator positions become available.
Working Conditions

Record Review
Prior to placement into the class candidates must pass a record review.
Driving Record
An excellent driving record is a requirement to become a Streetcar Operator. Applicants' driving records will be reviewed prior to selection. Transit Human Resources Office will purchase a current Five-Year Driving Abstract from the Washington State Department of Licensing. Driving records will be assessed on an individual basis and will be reviewed for the following: Frequency and seriousness of moving violations, suspension of license, failures to appear (FTA'S), unpaid tickets, and at fault accidents.
