Transit Engineer III (Mechanical)

As part of the Engineering and Design team in Metro Transit's Capital Division, this position performs mechanical engineering of building and industrial systems for Transit facilities. This includes the preparation of engineering designs, specifications and design reports, assisting project managers with estimating project budgets and schedules, performing quality control reviews of consultant designs, and engineering support for facility operations and maintenance staff. Position Information
This recruitment will be used to fill two career service positions. This recruitment is open to King County employees and the public. In addition, this selection process may be used to generate an eligibility pool for future career service, special duty (acting) and TLT (Term Limited Temporary) positions that may occur in this classification. The eligibility pool will be valid for six months upon creation at the discretion of the hiring authority. Salary range shown is 2018 rate; a new salary rate reflecting possible Cost-Of-Living and/or Market Adjustments since 2018 is under contract negotiation and is typically retroactive.- Job Duties
- Mechanical Engineering for Metro Transit facility capital projects, including: develop and analyze project alternatives, write predesign reports, prepare mechanical engineering designs, specifications and cost estimates.
- Coordinate mechanical designs with electrical, structural and civil engineering units.
- Review consultant reports, designs, specifications and cost estimates for mechanical engineering projects.
- Assist planners with the establishment of and modifications to project scopes.
- Assist project managers with preparing and monitoring of project budgets and schedules.
- Provide mechanical engineering support during construction, including submittal reviews and field inspections.
- Work with Metro Transit stakeholder groups and local, state and other regulatory agencies to perform analytical services, prepare construction documents, address mechanical engineering issues related to existing and planned facilities, and resolve conflicting goals.
- Provide engineering support to field operations and maintenance staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in engineering from a nationally accredited university, successfully passed the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering exam (has Engineer-In-Training Certification), and has two years' experience related to the job duties and qualifications required for this position.

- Knowledge of pertinent laws, codes and regulations related to mechanical engineering.

- Able to track and prioritize the assigned workload to accomplish multiple tasks within established schedules.
- Professional and respectful written and oral communication skills.
- Knowledge of sustainability, safety, risk, and ethical engineering project principles.
- Cost estimating experience to support project planning, lifecycle analysis and budgeting.
- Experience coordinating with consultants in the design of mechanical systems.
- Experience producing technical documents for a non-technical audience; skills include planning, writing, reviewing and editing for content and readability.
Highly Desirable:- Design experience with underground and aboveground storage tank systems.
- Knowledge of fuel storage tank regulatory requirements applicable in Washington State, King County and other local jurisdictions.
- Knowledge of hydraulic vehicle lift systems design, operation and maintenance.
- Design experience with industrial facility utility systems.
- Experience providing engineering support for aging infrastructure.
- Experience working with a variety of field staff to gather design information and to provide engineering support for troubleshooting field issues.
Necessary Special Requirements:- Engineer-in-Training Certification
- A valid Washington State Driver's License or ability to get one by the time of hire. Ability to drive to and access work sites.
- Advanced knowledge of software programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook, Bluebeam.
- Metro Transit is a mix of office and industrial environments. The engineer must be able to climb stairs, ladders, access roof and platform mounted equipment, enter confined spaces (e.g. sewage lift stations, underground tanks and sumps) and navigate industrial work areas that cannot be adapted to accommodate mobility related disabilities.

Work Schedule
Our regular business work schedule is 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday though work outside of the normal work day may be required. This position is exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and as such is not eligible for overtime pay.
Work Environment
Work is generally performed in an office environment with regular field investigations required. Work pressure, disturbances of work flow and/or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis.
