Transit Facilities Carpenter
- Summary
This position is responsible for performing carpentry work. Incumbents are responsible for the construction, repair and maintenance of equipment, buildings and other structures within the Transit system. Additional duties will include replacing glass panels and adding and repairing mullions at bus shelters, installing trash cans, hanging new doors, installing and repairing locks, and other carpentry duties.
The ideal candidate will have two years of journey level carpentry experience, and be able to work in a fast paced environment that includes refurbishing 4-6 passenger bus stations a week, performing a wide array of repairs to various structures and have locksmith experience.
Vacancy Information: This recruitment will be used to fill one immediate Career Service vacancies and may be used to create an eligibility list for future Career Service, Term Limited Temporary and Special Duty positions that may occur over the next twelve months.

Work schedule: Work schedules and locations are based on a seniority "pick" system, which occurs twice a year. Employees must be able and willing to work any shift, including any combination of days off, at any location. This position is overtime eligible.
Current opening is for day shift. Schedule will be 4/10's from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday or Tuesday through Friday. Changes to schedules may occur based on operational need and adherence to Local 587 contract.

- Refurbish approximately 4-6 bus passenger shelters weekly with a team of carpenters. Transport old and refurbished bus shelters as needed.
- Repair and maintain all structural components of buildings including walls, floors, ceilings, partitions, doorways, window casements, stairways, roofs, walkways, door locks and hardware and similar structures; install drywall; fabricate and repair guardrails, fences, decks and similar structures.
- Replace glass panels and add and repair mullions at bus passenger stations.
- Build concrete forms, pour cement and finish a variety of concrete features.
- Design, construct and repair cabinets, counters, specialty items and miscellaneous items.
- Operate and maintain carpentry shop equipment and tools.
- Drive standard trucks and lifts in the performance of assigned duties.
- Install trash cans and benches. May work near heavy traffic at times.
- Keep records of time and materials.
- Maintain working relationships with vendors, attending meetings.
- Be able to correspond via email.
- Perform locksmith duties and work on various doors.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
- Two years of journey-level carpentry work experience is required. (Information provided in your application should clearly communicate three years of journey-level work experience.)
- Completion of a verifiable recognized carpentry apprenticeship program, trade or vocational program, or equivalent work experience is required.
- Knowledge of and skill in the carpentry trade.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety practices within the carpentry trade.
- Skill in framing, glazing, doors, locks, concrete and shop work.
- Working knowledge of basic mathematical formulas, construction terminology and building codes.
- Skill in the interpretation and application of building blueprints and related design schematics. Ability to read and follow building blueprints and other design schematics.
- Knowledge of standard construction techniques, principles and building systems.
- Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work constructively on a team and with variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds. Provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to clearly speak and write in English.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast paced environment.
- Knowledge of Uniform Building Code and related building regulations
- Basic computer skills
- Skilled and knowledgeable of locksmith requirements
- Valid Washington State driver's license by date of hire
- Acceptable driving record
- Ability to obtain and maintain fork lift and high lift certification within six months of hire (training to be provided by employer)
This position requires individuals to frequently lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds by yourself and occasionally lift objects up to 100 pounds with assistance. Frequent walking, reaching, climbing, kneeling, stooping, and safe operation of power tools are also required. Ability to perform close tolerance work is necessary. Work is often performed in cramped and awkward positions.
Work Environment:
Work may be performed indoors or outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather. When warranted, safety equipment and protective clothing will be used/worn. Indoor work may include exposure to exhaust and fumes.
