Summary


We are filling 2 Short Term Temporary positions which is expected to last up to 5 months.  This position provides general labor at the Landfills/Transfer Stations in King County. Employees in this position perform skilled work by safely operating power and hand tools like chain saw, weed eater, walk-behind-mower to perform vegetation control and use.

WORK LOCATION:  The primary work location for this position is the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill, 16645 228th Ave., SE. Maple Valley, WA; travel may be required to other landfills/transfer stations within King County.
 
WORK SCHEDULE: This position is scheduled to work 40-hours per week.  This full-time position is overtime eligible with prior supervisor approval.  This position may work a 4/10 schedule.

OPERATIONS SECTION PROFILE:  The operations section of the Solid Waste Division operates a solid waste transfer and disposal system for residents and businesses in King County (except for Seattle).  The operations section is responsible for the transfer facilities, transportation, maintenance shop (maintaining the division's heavy equipment, vehicles and facilities), landfill operations, landfill gas and wastewater.  Commercial garbage collection companies and self-haulers (business and residential) bring solid waste to the transfer facilities, where it is located into large transfer trailers and hauled to the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill for disposal.  At the landfill, a network of environmental controls ensures the by-products of the decomposing waste are captured and managed.

EXAMPLES OF JOB DUTIES:
• Assist with the installation of construct and mend chain link fencing
• Clean ditches, catch basins, culverts and drain pipe.
• Dig ditches by hand.
• Shovel gravel, asphalt and dirt; rake asphalt and tar pavement joints.
• Lift, carry, move or handle up to 70-pound bags, tools equipment and other objects to complete any of the above functions.
• Maintain and operate a variety of hand and power tools.
• Perform related work as required.
• Assist in Vactor truck operation.
• Noxious weed control; identifying, pulling and spraying noxious weeds.

REQUIRED SKILLS:
• Demonstrated knowledge of and relevant work experience safely operating power and hand tools (i.e. chain saw, weed eater, and walk-behind-mower) to perform vegetation control.
• Knowledge of the use and care of tools and equipment.
• Demonstrated knowledge of basic construction skills, including building craft and mechanical skills using slope grade control lasers.
• Skill in reading blueprints and schematic drawings to perform landfill gas pipe installation.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Skill in reading and understanding road maps.
• Basic mathematics skills.
 
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT(S): Valid Washington State Driver's License and the ability to travel to other transfer stations during the course of the work day as work may be assigned at various sites throughout the county.  Offers of employment will be contingent upon verification of a valid Washington State Drivers License.  An offer of employment will be contingent on the success of a pre-employment physical examination.
 
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT/REQUIREMENT(S):  The candidate must have the ability to work on uneven slopes, surfaces, grades and terrain in inclement weather and other adverse conditions such as noise, dust and traffic.
 
UNION MEMBERSHIP:  This position is represented by Teamsters, Local 117 - Joint Units Agreement, membership in the union is required upon hire.
