- King County's new Department of Local Services (DLS) is currently recruiting to create an eligibility list that will be used to fill Utility Worker II positions such as regular career service, term-limited temporary (TLT), and short-term temporary positions in the Road Services Division, Maintenance Section.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
King County is the local service provider for the roughly quarter-million people who live in the unincorporated areas of the county; taken together, Unincorporated King County would be the second-largest city in the state. The Department of Local Services includes a Director's Office with a Community Service Area group, and the Road Services and Permitting Divisions. Together, this department provides a single executive point of accountability for delivery of local services to all of the unincorporated areas.
The King County Road Services Division designs, builds, operates and maintains roads and bridges in unincorporated areas of King County. The division is committed to ensuring the county's transportation system is safe and efficient for all uses and modes of travel. The Division is responsible for 1,500 miles of road and 182 bridges, 5.7 million feet of drainage ditches, over 44,000 traffic control signs, 78 traffic signals, and 50 traffic cameras in unincorporated King County.

WORK LOCATION: Various work locations. To be considered for some work locations, you must reside within 30 minutes from the work site.
WORK SCHEDULE: Monday – Friday; 8hr/day, 40hr/week (4/10 schedule in the summer). This position is non-exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible. Working after-hours, weekends, and holidays may be required in emergency circumstances, such as during inclement weather, and on special projects. Overtime hours, weekends, and holidays vary upon business demand, season and weather.

- Provide proper traffic control as described by the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control for Streets and Highways, by flagging or placing signs, cones, and barricades as appropriate to ensure crew and public safety.
- Perform road maintenance tasks such as asphalt overlay prep and repair, shoulder maintenance, etc.
- Perform assigned drainage structure repairs and minor construction, including pipes, catch basins and manholes as well as cleaning of ditches, gutters, catch basins, culverts, and drainage tiles.
- Perform maintenance and installation of guardrails.
- Properly plant vegetation and cuttings; cut and remove brush.
- Ability to safely operate trimmer/weed-eater, chainsaw, and other landscape equipment for long periods of time in any type of weather.
- Assist in the operation of Vactor equipment.
- Shovel snow, gravel, asphalt, and dirt; rake asphalt and tar pavement joints.
- Dig post-holes and set posts.
- Reading various road maps and construction blueprints.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
- Experience in construction, road maintenance, or other heavy manual labor areas.
- Knowledge in the use and care of hand tools and equipment used in construction, road maintenance, or other heavy manual labor areas.
- Knowledge of safety procedures and policies for construction, road maintenance, or other heavy manual labor areas (fall protection, confined space, hazardous materials).
- Knowledge of heavy manual labor activities.
- Ability to read maps, including Thomas Brothers.
- Basic knowledge of safety procedures.
- Skill in communications (oral and written)
- Ability to demonstrate behaviors that include fairness, respect, and inclusiveness.
- Skill in working with diverse individuals and customers and maintaining effective relationships.
- Ability to have predictable and reliable attendance.
- Desired:
- Valid Washington State Flagging Certificate
- Valid CPR and First Aid certifications
- Valid Defensive Driving Certification

Selection Process: Applications will be screened for clarity, completeness and qualifications. The most competitive candidates may be invited to participate in an interview and practical. Reference checks will be conducted.
Union Representation: This position is represented by the Teamsters, Local 117 Joint Units Agreement.
Necessary Requirements:- Successful applicants must have or obtain a valid driver's license from the state of Washington upon start date.
