JOB SUMMARY: The responsibilities of this classification include providing basic engineering designs, analysis and other functions for new construction projects or modifications/repairs to existing wastewater treatment facilities or assistance in reviewing complex design of large projects. The Wastewater Engineer - Entry, under close supervision from licensed professional engineering staff, will provide basic engineering tasks as assigned and may also act as a technical advisor in the field for a variety of situations as requested, including on-going wastewater construction projects and routine or emergency maintenance of systems and equipment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in an office environment along with a moderate amount of field visits throughout King County.
WORK SCHEDULE: This term-limited temporary position is Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA) exempt and is not overtime eligible. The regular workweek is full-time 40 hours, Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The successful candidates will:
- Provide basic engineering designs and assist in complex wastewater engineering designs for new construction projects and repairs and modifications to existing facilities. Participate in preliminary design meetings. Perform feasibility studies. Serve as the design engineer on less complex projects, under the supervision of technical staff.
- Plan and conduct engineering tests. Analyze test results to determine suitability of new or existing equipment or systems.
- Respond to equipment/system failures (routine and emergency) where technical engineering assistance is necessary. May interface with the work of maintenance staff to make necessary repairs.
- Update and maintain appropriate engineering records and files including, but not limited to, technical memorandum, drawings, specifications, design guides, and engineering standards.
- Assist in preparing wastewater project work plans, schedules, and budgets; assemble technical information for use by the project teams.
- Assist in reviews of consultant pre-design and final design documents. Validate economic analysis including technical assumptions and cost factors. Assist in the procurement process for consultants, equipment and construction work.
- Assist in reviewing consultant design work to identify and resolve potential design issues and coordination conflicts between disciplines; ensure that design standards and code requirements have been implemented.
- Participate in preliminary and final design review meetings on basic engineering tasks. Assist in the review of construction cost estimates. Evaluate bids by construction contractors and equipment vendors.
- Provide technical assistance during construction including submittal review.

The ideal candidate should have:- Bachelor's Degree in Civil, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering or related field.
- An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate or BS plus four years of engineering work commensurate with an EIT. The training and/or experience should include a preponderance of wastewater experience.
- Good verbal and writing communication skills
Knowledge
Analytical abilities are needed in the examination of new, existing and future systems and designs, modification of existing facilities to fit future needs, coordination and implementation of projects with County staff and contractors, and in the development of designs to meet user requirements.
Interpersonal Skills
Daily contacts with various agency staff and occasional contact with outside consultants, equipment vendors and outside contractors. Must be effective working with a diverse group of people. Effective verbal and written communication skills are required in relating technical information to a variety of audiences.
Work Environment
Work is generally performed in an office environment with some field work as assigned. Field work will be at construction sites and/or project work sites, such as wastewater treatment plants and conveyance facilities and will be based upon the duties assigned to the position.
