ASSISTANT DISPATCHER
jOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for assisting in the coordination of assignments on regularly scheduled routes, McKinney Vento routing, special events and field trips necessary to meet the compliance of time schedules for safe and efficient transportation operations. Aids in establishing and maintaining a positive, effective working relationship with Transportation employees, school staff, parents and community members.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Assists Dispatcher/Routers in ensuring that all student transportation routes are covered each day. Understands and utilizes district computer routing system for developing, implementing, and monitoring school bus runs.
- Assigns properly equipped buses based on special needs of students to be transported. Assists with scheduling field trips and temporary runs in accordance with departmental policy, regulations, and collective bargaining agreements.
- Prepares and distributes a variety of routing information to drivers such as master schedules, driver information, maps, and other items as required.
- Operates the two-way radio and telephone to transmit and receive messages with drivers and other District personnel.
- Communicates urgent information to drivers regarding special requirements, road conditions, routing, and out-of-the-ordinary conditions.
- Organizes daily log system of transportation activities; assists in gathering and reviewing information for the OSPI annual ridership reports.
- Works with the Special Services Department to set up special education routes for morning and afternoon transportation.
- Communicates orally and in writing with District personnel, parents, and citizens regarding transportation information and requests. Acts as liaison with local school districts regarding McKinney Vento.
- Communicates with driver and arranges for emergency transportation in the event of an accident or breakdown; communicates with mechanics concerning equipment damage or breakdown; assigns and monitors District-owned equipment.
- Assists with student management issues; accesses recorded video; observes student behavior; refers or coordinates viewing of bus video footage as appropriate.
- Composes and/or prepares various transportation documents and reports. Ensures maps and transportation forms are maintained and updated regularly.
- Maintains strong public relations through proactive problem solving and maintaining confidentiality.
- Maintain knowledge of safety standards, laws, codes, rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to all transportation and student safety needs.
- May drive a school bus when warranted.
- Perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.

Reports to the Transportation Manager
WORKING CONDITIONS
Required to deal with a large amount of interruptions on telephone, in person, or on the two-way radio; required to deal with distraught or difficult individuals; required to meet inflexible scheduling deadlines during snow days or emergency situations; may be confined to workstation periodically; may be involved with potentially sensitive or controversial transportation matters; exposure to vehicle traffic noise, emissions, fumes, fueling, and other loud noises.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
High school graduation or equivalent with two (2) years of experience in pupil transportation. Experience with schedule and route data development preferred.
Allowable Substitution
Alternative combinations of training and experience may substitute, as determined by the district, for the stated requirements.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of safety standards, laws, codes, rules, and regulations governing transportation; knowledge of the district site locations, boundaries, terrain, local and surrounding roads; knowledge of bus and equipment needs; knowledge of Microsoft Office Word and Excel, Versa Trans, and other logistical resources; ability to read, write, and communicate effectively; ability to read and interpret road and street maps; ability to operate a two-way radio; ability to operate a computer and learn the use of specific software programs; ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with district staff, parents, students, and the public; ability to work calmly, cooperatively and effective with others while maintaining confidential and sensitive information; skill in problem resolution; ability to organize and prioritize tasks; ability to work independently with minimal supervision; ability to work within a team; ability to schedule and coordinate routes and activities; ability to operate standard office equipment.
Licenses/Special Requirements
Hold and maintain a valid Washington State Class B Commercial Driver's License with all endorsements to drive a school bus; hold a current Washington State OSPI School Bus Authorization Certificate; hold and maintain a Department of Transportation Medical Examiners Certificate (DOT); all drivers are subject to pre- and random post-employment testing for controlled substances and alcohol; possess and maintain an excellent driving history (ADR driving abstract); hold and maintain a First Aid and CPR certification.
