Accounting Supervisor
PURPOSE:
Provide advanced technical accounting services to the Port of Seattle while supervising, coaching and reviewing the work of Capital Services team members. Responsible for the financial integrity and ensuring Capital Service transactions are in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) including all sections of Accounting and Financial Reporting (AFR).

Provide supervision and leadership for Capital Services team members:
Provide supervision, mentorship and leadership to team members by identifying their professional strengths, and guiding and motivating them to further enhance their professional skillset. Conduct performance reviews and review and approve time and attendance.
Direct, guide, review and approve the team members’ work. Direct and coach team members to identify, prioritize and resolve problems, evaluate work products, methods and procedures. Provide direction and supervision over account reconciliations. Supervise and coordinate month-end close schedules and supervise Capital Service’s portion of the interim and final financial audits.
Ensure Financial Integrity:
Oversee analysis and resolution of complex accounting irregularities that cross multiple systems. Maintain the accuracy and integrity of timely financial reporting. Proactively identify risk and work toward risk mitigation. Identify, lead and implement business process improvements and leverage technology. Provide financial system and accounting guidance on emerging accounting issues.
Technical Lead: Project Costing and Asset Management Modules:
Provide functional and technical assistance to resolve system issues that arise during the course of business. Assess software project proposals/software demos to determine impact on business processes, and provide technical support to ensure that the system(s) meets the business needs of the Port, and that procedures and controls are in place. Ensure the integrity of data within the project costing modules. Actively engage in the development of the project costing test scripts, training manuals and changes in policy and procedures. Plan and strategize training delivery for project costing and asset management modules. Communicate system changes to module stakeholders.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Broad based accounting knowledge with an in-depth understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) in addition to fund accounting. Knowledge of Federal and State grant claims for reimbursement and related reporting in accordance with uniform administrative requirements, cost principles and specific agency requirements. Knowledge of Passenger Facility Charge (PFC) eligibility and reporting in compliance with the PFC program and guide. Knowledge required to supervise the work of the Capital Services team. Solid foundation and understanding of complex financial accounting and financial reporting systems including software security.
Strong leadership and supervisory skills in prioritizing work, monitoring workloads, balancing workflow, performance planning and appraisals, goal setting, conflict resolution, training and career development. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal. Must be detail-oriented, demonstrating success in accuracy. Advanced analytical, problem-solving, decision-making and time management skills.
Expertise in project costing and asset management and other financial modules and systems that interface to or from the project costing module. Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
Ability to present information and respond to complex accounting, system and technical questions from various departments and external auditors. Customer service oriented with the ability to cultivate and maintain a professional working relationship with customers inside and outside the organization. Ability to work proactively and independently and multi-task in a very fast paced environment with competing, deadlines. Must be flexible, with the ability to work longer hours based on workload; month-end, and year-end when needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Combination of education and experience demonstrating knowledge, skills and abilities equivalent to:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field;
- Seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in a general accounting environment;
- Seven (7) years of knowledge and experience working with complex accounting and financial reporting systems in a large organization; and in which
- Two (2) of the seven (7) years of experience must include supervising or leading a team of professionals;
- An active CPA license is required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Expertise with PeopleSoft systems including set-up, reporting and running of complex queries;
- Experience in Project Costing, Asset Management, Construction or Project Management;
- Grant Management Program(s) Certification, and/or Construction or Project Management Certification.
