Capital Projects Manager
OVERVIEW
Recompose is an ecological death care company offering the service of natural organic reduction (NOR), where human bodies are converted into soil (aka "human composting".) The Recompose model offers an authentic, participatory experience for families and a natural return to the earth for the dead. Our first location - "the Greenhouse" - opened in December 2020 in Kent, WA. Recompose is transforming the funeral industry and creating deep ecological change. We are looking to hire people who are passionate about creating a radical new death care paradigm and helping to heal the environment through this work.
Recompose is seeking a Capital Projects Manager to facilitate our growth and expansion. This person will work with the CEO to develop new Recompose locations. The Capital Projects Manager will support the planning and start-up of all new facilities (both HQ-owned and development partnerships). Responsibilities include site evaluation, partner vetting, facility layout, permit research, budgeting, coordination between design and brokerage teams, and support of process equipment commissioning.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop opportunities for expansion:
- Bring a high level of discipline and organization to the expansion process.
- Work with Recompose policy team to understand upcoming policy changes in various states and countries and timeline for possible expansion in each region.
- Work with CEO to vet partners based on values-alignment, experience, and resource access.
- Work with brokerage team to find potential sites for new facilities.
- Evaluate potential sites based on existing legislation, regulation, and zoning.
- Develop an understanding of the cultural and historical context of areas where we might expand and prioritize communication with diverse communities.
- Produce basic scaled facility layouts to test fit potential sites.
- Evaluate potential sites and understand any obstacles to a cost-effective build-out.
Develop new locations:
- Work with CEO, Recompose services team, and Recompose NOR team to ensure appropriate programming for specific location and market.
- Support COO and brokerage firm in contract negotiations for new leases.
- Perform research and coordinate permitting (clean air agencies, wastewater agencies, Departments of Ecology, etc) and understand the specific regulations for each location.
- Work with design team to develop preconstruction estimates.
- Work with CEO to determine required startup capital and overall facility budget.
Manage build-out and start-up of new locations:
- Act as Recompose point-of-contact for design team, construction team, and systems/equipment manufacturers.
- Work with services team to understand needs for body storage and preparation, gathering spaces, and public-facing areas.
- Work with NOR team to understand places for process improvement and production line optimization.
- Realize improvement and optimization via communications with contractors.
- Coordinate systems layout and work with Recompose NOR team, design team, and construction team to ensure best fit of equipment and process controls.
- Produce scaled drawings of production line layouts.
- Work with contractors to manage process equipment layout and installation.
- Support the commissioning of all systems and work with staff and contractors to troubleshoot.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of previous experience in project management, construction management, architecture, or real estate development.
- Some experience in process engineering, production engineering, and/or manufacturing processes.
- Experience in scheduling, budgeting, and forecasting.
- Facility with scaled software programs (CAD), and ability to use for facility layouts, etc.
- Experience in setting and measuring goals, metrics, and strategies.
- Experience using equipment software, databases, spreadsheets, word processors, the internet and email.
- Ability to see the overall picture and assess various project and company goals (sustainability, budgetary, pleasant work environments, etc.)
