General Summary: Performs automotive work on motor-pool and maintenance vehicles, and equipment. Establishes and keeps accurate inventory and vehicle records for all related service station activities. Leads and directs part-time seasonal employee to assist in maintaining (cleaning) of all motor-pool vehicles. Serves as the Hazardous Work Operations Supervisor.
Job Description:
- Performs ASE certified level of automotive work on university owned vehicles and equipment (gas/diesel/electric/propane). Establishes and keeps accurate inventory and vehicle records for all related service activities. May perform light torch or welding work.
- Performs necessary repairs and adjustments on university owned landscape equipment.
- Adheres to all safety and warranty requirements for each vehicle / equipment per manufacturer's recommendations.
- Performs and directs part-time labor to assist in maintaining (cleaning) of vehicles.
- Serves as the Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Supervisor (HAZWOPER) for the Facilities Department. Coordinates Physical Plant Hazardous Waste collection sites / shipments and coordinates emergency spill response in accordance with applicable WAC, DOT and RCRA regulations. 24-hour on-call for plant Haz-Mat emergency.
- Arranges for Auto Shop & Building Maintenance Hazardous Waste Shipment, and maintains records. Supports departmental compliance and provides maintenance manager and AVP with advice during hazardous waste cleanup operations
- Supports departmental compliance with RCRA, WISHA, L&I, and D.O.E. for hazardous waste emergency procedures, equipment, emergency systems, and monitoring equipment.
- Performs light carpentry activities as directed. This may involve installation or removal of signage, setting out barricades, occasionally hanging signage related banners, etc.
- Will be on-call on a rotating basis approximately four times a year. The person on-call is responsible to be available via phone or pager during off-hours, including weekends, and be able to respond to the campus within two hours of being contacted. On-call duties may include a variety of maintenance activities such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, door hardware/locks. On-call supervisor is available via phone for advice and support.
- All Facilities employees are designated as "essential staff" and are subject to working during times that the university closes due to inclement weather or an emergency.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Three years experience performing auto maintenance and small engine repairs; One year Hazardous Materials handling. Work experience that proves good judgement in making decisions, asking for help, bringing forward problems, communication with others, and working around moving machinery and electricity.
- Must possess the physical dexterity to work in, under, and around motor vehicles.
- Must be knowledgeable in incident response operations, team functions, personnel safety, and field equipment. Ability to properly use hand tools and power equipment used in the trade. .
- Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds. Must be able to carry, deploy, climb and lift different size ladders. Ability to work from ladders and elevated platforms. Must be able to climb stairs and ladders while carrying supplies or equipment. Must be able to access all areas of campus, including building roofs, any hour of the day or night.
- Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to learn and act on new technical or complex information. Effective work habits, including commitment to quality of work, attention to detail, time management and organizational skills.
- Ability to drive service vehicle. Valid Washington State Driver's license and good driving record.
- PPE Certifications of A, B, C, D, and Supervisor's certification; RCRA and OSHA certification; HAZWOPER 40-hour Certification; Forklift certification. Ability to achieve and maintain a minimum of 16-hour Asbestos Worker Certification. (training will be provided as needed).
- ASE Certified Master Technician, a plus.
- Experience with Microsoft Office products including Outlook email, Word and Excel. Experience with iPad and work order tracking software is preferred.

Position will remain open until filled.
Salary: $56,000 - $61,500 annually, DOE
This is a full time position with excellent benefits. SPU pays the employee premium for medical, dental, and vision insurance.
