General Summary: As an Electrician performs work on the building electrical systems and equipment that operate in the voltage range of 12 to 480 volts. As the Low Voltage Electrician, also performs electrical work related to electrical systems of less than 12 volts, including electronic circuitry.
Job Description:
Electrician:
- Inspects, tests, maintains, repairs, and replaces all indoor lighting fixtures, outdoor lighting fixtures, lighting controls, lighting timers, emergency lights, dimmers, and hard wired remote control systems.
- Inspects, tests, maintains, repairs, and replaces electrical equipment including motors, uninterruptable power supply, relay, magnetic starters, and electrical heating systems such as radiant and resistant heat, appliances, power tools, panel boards and transformers.
- Inspects, tests, maintains, repairs, and replaces wiring circuits including cable, wire, conduit, duct bank, cable trays, circuit breaker panels (including all components), fuses, and switches.
- Performs minor installation or modification work on electrical systems, including planning the work; estimating and arranging the materials, supplies, and equipment required; and coordinating with other trades.
Low Voltage Electrician:
- Inspects, tests, calibrates, repairs, and replaces various low voltage components and systems including building security, communication, building automation, and master clock.
- Inspects, tests, calibrates, repairs, and replaces electronic systems.
- Inspects, tests, calibrates, repairs, and replaces low voltage components built into larger equipment or systems.
- Performs minor installation or modification work, including pathway conduit, on low voltage systems, including planning the work; estimating and arranging the materials, supplies, and equipment required; and coordinating with other trades.
All Jobs:
- Carries and deploys ladders. Performs work from ladders, elevated platforms and rooftops.
- Inspects worksite for planned work's impact on other faculty and staff. Consults with his supervisor and our departmental safety plans to ensure safety and regulatory compliance. Works with his/her supervisor to either prevent or communicate planned outages with key staff and departments.
- Leads and supports other trades personnel in techniques, installation, and maintenance.
- This position is responsible to be on-call on a rotating basis approximately 4 times per year. The person on-call must be available via phone or pager during off-hours, including weekends, and be able to respond to the campus within two hours of being contacted. While serving on-call this position may perform a variety of maintenance activities.
- All Facilities employees are designated as "essential staff" and are subject to working during times that the university closes due to inclement weather or an emergency.
Regulated Building Materials Abater:
- Abates minor amounts of asbestos, lead, and mold under direction and supervision of the institution's planned named Asbestos Supervisor. Earns and maintains an EPA Lead Renovator Certification (8-hr). Earns and maintains a minimum of 40-hour Asbestos Supervisor Certification. (May serve as the back-up to the Asbestos Supervisor in their absence, if 40-hour certified.) Receive training and perform some mold remediation
- Earns and maintains an AHERA Building Inspector certification. May occasionally collect lead and asbestos samples for independent laboratory analysis. Will then prepare report of findings and present facts clearly both orally and in writing.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
Any equivalent combination of the following skills, abilities education, and experience:
- Knowledge of electrical principles and their application to maintenance, repair, replacement, and installation of electric distribution systems and equipment.
- Knowledge of national, state, and city electrical codes.
- Knowledge of safety practices and procedures used around electricity.
- Minimum of 4 years journeyman level work experience as an electrician.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematic drawings, charts, and technical instructions.
- Ability to apply electrical formulas and conversion tables to job requirements.
- Ability to properly use hand tools and power equipment used in the trade and to make proper connections, including soldering and splicing wires.
- Work experience that proves good judgement in making decisions, asking for help, bringing forward problems, communication with others, and working around moving machinery and electricity.
- Knowledge of or experience with building codes, electrical codes, and fire codes.
Other qualifications:
- Valid driver's license, must be able to drive service vehicle. Must maintain a good driving record.
- Ability to achieve and maintain a minimum of 40-hour Asbestos Supervisor Certification (training will be provided as needed).
- Ability to achieve and maintain AHERA Building Inspector certification.
- Washington State Journeyman Electrician license.
- Must be physically able to wear a tight fitting half mask respirator and pass annual medical exam.
- Must be physically able to perform mold remediation (training will be provided).
- Ability to properly use hand tools and power equipment used in the trade.
- Must be able to load and unload materials. Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds.
- Must be able to carry, deploy, climb and lift different size ladders. Ability to work from ladders and elevated platforms. Must be able to climb stairs and ladders while carrying supplies or equipment.
- Must be able to access all areas of campus, including building roofs, any hour of the day or night.
- Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to learn and act on new technical or complex information.
- Effective work habits, including commitment to quality of work, attention to detail, time management and organizational skills.
- Strong personal commitment to the University's Christian ministry and mission statement.

Salary: $62,890 DOE
This is a full time position with excellent benefits. SPU pays the employee premium for medical, dental, and vision insurance. SPU makes contributions to an employee HSA account and to a retirement account after one year of eligibility in the plan.
