Job Description:

GENERAL SUMMARY:  Inspects, tests, maintains, repairs, and replaces food service equipment (kitchen) as required in various campus dining facilities. Performs work on piping systems transporting liquids, gases, and steam, including both supply and drain piping and related fixtures. As the Low Voltage Electrician, also performs electrical work related to electrical systems of less than 12 volts, including electronic circuitry.

FOOD SERVICE EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN:

  • Inspects, tests, maintains, and repairs food service equipment (kitchen) as required in various campus dining facilities, such as steamers, grills, ovens, griddles, refrigerators and freezers, ice machines, mixers, dish belt, disposers, etc.  May service dish machine when called upon.
  • Diagnose and repair malfunctions in various types of food service equipment (kitchen). With Maintenance Manager and service desk personnel, coordinates contracted repair of specialty kitchen equipment.
  • Install new food service equipment as required.
  • Repair, replace, recalibrate controls thermostats switches, fuses, and electrical wiring.
  • Fabricate, assemble, and install electrical wiring, controls and piping according to specification and code.
  • Wire and connect motors, compressors, temperature controls, and humidity controls according to wiring schematics.
  • Maintain cleaning, and preventative maintenance schedules and procedures for all food service equipment. Clean and sanitize equipment.
  • Orders parts and maintains an inventory of critical spare parts in Facilities maintenance stores warehouse.

PLUMBER:

  • Maintains, clears, repairs, and replaces:  drain lines including grease traps, basket strainers, disposals, and roof drains; including piping and venting. This also includes water supply lines and related fixtures such as faucets, water filters, pumps, valves, drinking fountains, hot water heaters, safety showers, and eye wash station.       

LOW VOLTAGE ELECTRICIAN:

  • Inspects, tests, calibrates, repairs, and replaces various low voltage components and systems.
  • Performs minor installation or modification work, including pathway conduit, on low voltage systems, including planning the work; estimating and arranging the materials, supplies, and equipment required; and coordinating with other trades.

ALL JOBS: 

  • Carries and deploys ladders. Performs work from ladders, elevated platforms and rooftops.
  • Inspects worksite for planned work's impact on other faculty and staff. Consults with his supervisor and our departmental safety plans to ensure safety and regulatory compliance. Works with his/her supervisor to either prevent or communicate planned outages with key staff and departments.
  • Will be on-call on a rotating basis approximately 6 times per year. The person on-call is responsible to be available via phone or pager during off-hours, including weekends, and be able to respond to the campus within two hours of being contacted. While serving on-call this position may perform a variety of maintenance activities such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, door hardware/locks.
  • Receives cross-training on other trade disciplines and may serve as backup to other maintenance roles during absences or high activity periods.
  • All Facilities employees are designated as "essential staff" and are subject to working during times that the university closes due to inclement weather or an emergency.

REGULATED BUILDING MATERIALS ABATER / HAZWOPER SUPERVISOR:

  • May receive training and be asked to abate minor amounts of asbestos, lead, and mold under direction and supervision of an Asbestos Supervisor. Earns and maintains a minimum of 32-hour Asbestos Worker Certification. Receive training and perform some mold remediation. Earns and maintains a HAZWOPER certification and will serve as the backup to the primary HAZWOPER Supervisor.

Requirements:

  • Graduation from a vocational technical school with journeyman level skills certification in refrigeration, plumbing, low voltage electric - or equivalent work experience. Knowledge of building codes and work practices involved in the refrigeration, plumbing and electrical profession.
  • Minimum of 4 years journeyman level work experience in food service equipment (kitchen), plumbing, low voltage. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematic drawings, and other technical instructions. Work experience that proves good judgement in making decisions, asking for help, bringing forward problems, communication with others, and working around moving machinery and electricity.
  • Valid Washington State Driver's license and good driving record.
  • Ability to achieve and maintain a minimum of 32-hour Asbestos Worker Certification (training will be provided as needed). HAZWOPER (training will be provided as needed). Forklift certification (training will be provided as needed).
  • Must be physically able to wear a tight fitting half mask respirator and pass annual medical exam. Must be physically able to perform mold remediation (training will be provided). Ability to properly use hand tools and power equipment used in the trade. 
  • Must be able to load and unload materials. Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds. Must be able to carry, deploy, climb and lift different size ladders. Ability to work from ladders and elevated platforms. Must be able to climb stairs and ladders, and to safely transport supplies or equipment to elevated work areas. Must be able to access all areas of campus any hour of the day or night.
  • Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to learn and act on new technical or complex information. Effective work habits, including commitment to quality of work, attention to detail, time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong personal commitment to the University's Christian ministry and mission statement.

Additional Information:

Position will remain open until filled.

Salary:  $60,000 -$ 62,636 annually DOE

This is a full time position with excellent benefits. SPU pays the employee premium for medical, dental, and vision insurance. SPU makes generous contributions to an employee HSA account and a 7% contribution to a retirement account, for eligible employees, with immediate vesting in the plan. Tuition discount program (50% - 90%) available for the employee and qualified immediate family members.
