General Summary:  Maintains, repairs, and replaces, building hardware, woodwork, casework, cabinetry, demountable partition furniture and various building systems. Maintains locks in doors and building equipment and all door hardware. Performs work involving concrete, stone, brick, plaster, and tile in interiors and exteriors of buildings. Applicants with less than 4 years of experience, or experience in just one area (carpentry, locksmith, mason) are still encouraged to apply. Job Description:


  • Maintains, repairs, and replaces furniture and equipment found in offices, classrooms, laboratories, and common areas such as furniture, shelving, pencil sharpeners, chalkboards, whiteboards, tack boards, projection screens, artwork, classroom furniture, auditorium seats, athletic fixtures, and equipment. Installs signage. Ability to move furniture and equipment. 
  • Installs and maintains fire extinguishers, including associated cabinets, stand alone smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and assists in record keeping. 
  • Repairs and replaces structural woodwork and wood equipment such as counters, cabinets, benches, partitions, doors, shelving, display cases, building framework and finishes which includes drywall repairs. 
  • Repairs and replaces building systems such as directly applied and suspended ceilings, vinyl flooring, doors, including hardware, window hardware, partitions, insulation, and metal T-bar systems. 
  • Performs minor building and office renovations related to furnishings, including planning the work, estimating and arranging materials, supplies, and equipment required; and coordinating with other trades. 
  • Supports electricians by repairing and replacing light switches, receptacles, lamps of all types, fluorescent ballasts, exit fixtures, emergency light fixtures, lamp holders, and lamp sockets, fuses, and circuit breakers, small motors, conduit, electrical panels. 
  • Maintains, repairs, and replaces building architectural systems and elements, typically involving windows, doors, glazing, window covers, and insulation. Installs stud framing. May also perform minor painting.  May perform minor roofing and siding repairs. 


  • Inspects, maintains, repairs, and replaces locks and lock systems, both mechanical and electronic, used for buildings, rooms, and storage rooms and lockers, including disassembly and replacement of worn parts to ensure proper operation. 
  • Provides services including opening locks, making keys, pin new locks, re-pin existing locks. 
  • Maintains key and lock records. 
  • Inspects, maintains, repairs, and replaces door hardware such as hinges, closures, and panic bars to ensure proper operation. 
  • Performs small installation jobs, working from drawings, and including planning the work; estimating and arranging the materials, supplies, and equipment required; and coordination with required trades. 


  • Maintains and repairs masonry systems and finishes, including stone, cement block, brick; tasks include tuck-pointing services, repairing and resetting cast block elements.  
  • Maintains, repairs and replaces ceramic tile. 
  • Maintains, repairs, and replaces plaster surfaces, including cementitious and lime base coats, and involving all work required, such as removal of damaged or worn material, preparation of underlying lathe or masonry base and application of coats of plaster and decorative material as required for a smooth and decorative finish. 
  • Performs small masonry or plaster jobs, working from drawings, and including planning the work, estimating and arranging the materials, supplies, and equipment required; and coordination with required trades. 
  • Performs concrete flatwork (sidewalks and small walls), including formwork, mixing, pouring, and finishing.  


  • Carries and deploys ladders. Performs work from ladders, elevated platforms and rooftops. 
  • Inspects worksite for planned work's impact on other faculty and staff. Consults with his supervisor and our departmental safety plans to ensure safety and regulatory compliance. Works with his/her supervisor to either prevent or communicate planned outages with key staff and departments. 
  • This position is responsible to be on-call on a rotating basis approximately 4 times per year. The person on-call must be available via phone or pager during off-hours, including weekends, and be able to respond to the campus within two hours of being contacted. While serving on-call this position may perform a variety of maintenance activities. 
  • All Facilities employees are designated as "essential staff" and are subject to working during times that the university closes due to inclement weather or an emergency. 


  • With provided training, abates minor amounts of asbestos, lead, and mold under direction and supervision of an Asbestos Supervisor. Earns and maintains a minimum of 32-hour Asbestos Worker Certification. Receive training and perform some mold remediation.  


  • Graduation from a vocational technical school or equivalent on the job training with  journeyman level skills / certification in at least one of these areas:  carpenter, locksmith, mason. 
  • Four years of on-the-job experience with demonstrated journeyman level carpentry, locksmith, or mason skills. Knowledge of methods and practices used in woodworking and cabinetry. Knowledge of methods and practices used in metal and plastic building systems and furniture. 
  • Work experience that proves good judgement in making decisions, asking for help, bringing forward problems, communication with others, and working around moving machinery.  
  • Knowledge of or experience with building codes, electrical codes, and fire codes, is preferred.
  • Valid Washington State Driver's license. Must be able to drive service vehicle. Must maintain a good driving record.
  • Ability to achieve and maintain a minimum of 32-hour Asbestos Worker Certification (training will be provided).  Ability to obtain and maintain a forklift license (training will be provided).
  • Must be physically able to wear a tight fitting half mask respirator and pass annual medical exam. 
  • Ability to properly use hand tools and power equipment used in the trade. Ability to operate trailerable jackhammer and equipment.   
  • Must be able to load and unload materials. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds. Must be able to carry, deploy, climb and lift different size ladders. Ability to work from ladders and elevated platforms. Must be able to climb stairs and ladders while carrying supplies or equipment. Must be able to access all areas of campus, including building roofs, any hour of the day or night. 
  • Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to learn and act on new technical or complex information. Effective work habits, including commitment to quality of work, attention to detail, time management and organizational skills.
  • Physical ability to perform mold remediation (training provided), is a plus.
  • Experience with computers for operational support (MS Office Suite - Word/Outlook/Excel) use is preferred.
  • Strong commitment to the University's Christian ministry and mission statement.

Salary:  $57,000 - $63,000 DOE

This is a full time position with excellent benefits. SPU pays the employee premium for medical, dental, and vision insurance. SPU makes contributions to an employee HSA account and to a retirement account after one year of eligibility in the plan.
