The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is seeking graduate students to serve as Undergraduate Admissions Readers during winter quarter 2020. These positions offer a valuable, hands-on opportunity to participate with Admissions professionals in the review of undergraduate applications for autumn quarter 2020.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Readers will assess freshman applications, using a combination of personal and academic factors. Final admission decisions are made by Admissions administrators, based on Reader assessments.
DATES OF EMPLOYMENT: Appointment covers five pay periods: December 16, 2019-February 29, 2020. Training will be held on the following dates: December 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20. In-person attendance is mandatory on all five days.
Work must be completed by February 17, although the appointment continues through February 29. After deducting training hours, students will be required to work 152 hours in 8 weeks, approximately 19 hours per week. Must read at a rate of 7-10 applications per hour, for a total of approximately 1,000 applications.
HOURS: 183 hours over 5 pay periods. Undergraduate admission applications will be reviewed on-line. Most Readers will choose to work off-site and are welcome to work anywhere with a reliable internet connection. Students must be present for one required meeting in Schmitz Hall each Thursday during winter quarter.
REQUIREMENTS:
-read and evaluate applications, considering both academic and personal factors;
-learn quickly and apply complicated assessment guidelines;
-apply assessment principles without personal bias;
-read rapidly (7-10 applications per hour) and accurately;
-work independently for hours at a time.

Question 1: Your assignment is to select a strong and diverse class of freshmen for the University of Washington. What is the meaning of “strong and diverse?” What academic and personal factors would you choose to consider in reviewing applications for the desired freshman class, and why?
Question 2: How will you objectively evaluate an applicant whose views conflict with yours? Is it ever appropriate to use judgement based on personal opinion in reviewing for admission to a public university? Please give an example to illustrate your decision.
You will also be asked to provide contact information for 2-3 references (name, title, phone, email).
Your application will not be considered complete, nor will it be reviewed, without the required responses addressing the questions above.
APPLICATION CLOSING DATE: October 24, 2019. We encourage early applications. Interviews and hiring are conducted throughout the application period, but all applications submitted by the closing date will be reviewed and given full consideration.
NOTIFICATION DATES: We will notify those accepted for the positions by November 7, 2019. Students will have one week from the date of our notification to accept or decline the position.
SALARY: Major components of tuition plus standard salary. Salary is commensurate with student standing.
