DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:
The department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) at the UW School of Dentistry specializes in the diagnosis, surgical treatment, and management of diseases associated with the face and jaws such as trauma, infections, disorders, and cancer associated with the face and neck. Our clinics work closely with residents acquiring their OMS certification and the school’s General Practice Residency program, giving students unique learning experiences like extractions, implant placements, and dental anesthesia and sedation in a clinic setting. Our core values include compassion and respect for our patients, high moral and ethical standards, a diverse workforce, and a commitment to evidence-based and technically excellent clinical practices.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS), the Administrator is responsible for directing staff and managing resources in the Department of OMS, including operating and capital budgets, facilities, equipment, and personnel. The Administrator must demonstrate effective supervisory skills, business acumen, independent administrative judgment, and innovative ability, while complying with University policies and procedures. The Administrator acts in an advisory capacity to the Chair and various Department and School of Dentistry committees, and advocates for departmental goals and resources with the Office of the Dean and external partners (e.g., UWMC, Harborview). It is incumbent on this individual that the Department runs smoothly and that staff, faculty, residents, and students understand the performance expectations the Department has for them.
The Administrator manages the development process for the Department’s biennial state budgets and also manages the finances of numerous federal and local grants, contracts, subcontracts, clinical trials, endowments, and the self-sustaining OMS clinic budget, which generates revenues of $3.5 million annually. This position has responsibility for centralized coordination of staff personnel matters, including hiring, layoff, and termination; provides leadership to the Department’s administrative staff to ensure compliance with policies and implementing procedures; participates in developing and monitoring databases and systems necessary for planning, forecasting, and tracking financial developments; is responsible for day-to-day management of information systems, administrative offices and day-to-day oversight of administrative operations; and provides advice and support to the chair and faculty on financial and human resource-related activities.
The Administrator is a member of the School’s senior administrative team, which helps define internal policies and procedures; serves as the Department liaison with other School of Dentistry departments and University offices on resource issues, including finance, space, and personnel. This position interfaces with and represents a segment of the UW to numerous University stakeholders, including the Washington Dental Service and WDS Foundation, the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, representatives of various funding sources, private practice dentists, affiliate faculty, leaders of health districts, and members of oral and maxillofacial surgery departments at other universities.
The Administrator has a secondary reporting line to the Assistant Dean for Finance and Resources in the School of Dentistry on financial and resource matters and advises the Assistant Dean on matters jointly affecting the department and the school.
