UW faculty and staff also enjoy outstanding benefits, professional growth opportunities and unique resources in an environment noted for diversity, intellectual excitement, artistic pursuits and natural beauty. All of which has allowed the UW to be nationally recognized as a “Great College to Work For” for six consecutive years.
The Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington (APL-UW) is a national center for advanced science and engineering research and development and education. APL-UW was formed in 1943 for the U.S. Navy to bring university research resources to bear on urgent WWII defense problems. APL-UW has developed an international reputation for its broad based programs in science, engineering and for designing, building, and deploying the advanced technology required to meet the research needs of numerous government and commercial sponsors. With modern facilities, equipment and over 350 talented researchers and staff, APL-UW provides a unique, dynamic work environment with many opportunities.
APL has an outstanding opportunity for an Administrator.
The Administrator of the Laboratory's Acoustics department will be tasked with strategic planning, financial management, grant and contract management, personnel management, human resources administration, and enhancing the productivity and efficiency of the Department’s research projects and personnel.
The Administrator supports a thriving research department comprised of 28 principal investigators, support and administrative staff, and graduate and undergraduate students. Collectively, the departments’ research awards total approximately $7M, representing approximately 60 grants and contracts.
The Administrator's primary responsibilities involve department-level finance and human resource administration; and a high volume of pre- and post-award research administration. It is critical for the Administrator to independently determine how to meet the demands of a very fast-paced research department so that all work is accomplished on time. From time to time this involves work at home, in the evening or on weekends, staying late as necessary, or coming into the office on a weekend day. Work done at home or while commuting may include editing proposals or research papers, reading of other materials that are easily portable. During times of tight deadlines, such as program site review or proposal due dates, or when a field program needs support, the incumbent must work whatever is required to do the job.

-Must work collaboratively and with diverse groups of people.
-Demonstrated high level of expertise in PC operations, and standard business software (MS Office Suite) including ten-key by touch.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED:
-Experience at a major research University in managing federally funded research, scientific, or high technology groups.
-Extensive experience in managing multiple projects and budgets simultaneously.
-Experience with the preparation and submission of grant and contract proposals to federal agencies, such as the Office of Naval Research, NAVSEA, SERDP, DURIP, National Science Foundation.
