Our Laboratory Medicine Department has an outstanding opportunity for an APPLICATION INTERFACE SPECIALIST. The primary role of this position is to support the application interfaces connected to our Laboratory Information System (LIS) of UW Medicine.
UW Laboratory Medicine’s LIS connects to a variety of clinical applications including but not limited to Cerner Millennium (ORCA), Epic Care, Epic Cadance, Mindscape, Soarian, Theradoc, Docusys, Amalga, MayoAccess, Emdeon, Washington State DOH, and RALS. We also utilize Iguana, an application interface engine. This position is responsible for managing, maintaining, monitoring and testing all of these interfaces as part of our collaborative Laboratory Medicine Informatics Team.
This position also shares responsibility for managing, maintaining and monitoring the LIS as a whole. This includes the responsibility for ensuring accurate and appropriate configuration for all testing performed in the clinical laboratories for UW Medicine and its affiliated medical facilities including the University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, Northwest Hospital and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.
In addition, this position is responsible for implementing, integrating, and supporting LIS features optimizing laboratory operations. This position supports the UW Medicine’s and the University of Washington’s primary objectives by ensuring accurate laboratory results for educational, research purposes and patients in our community as well as those from other states.
This individual will serve as a LIS application interface expert for the entire Department of Laboratory Medicine and its associated laboratories and other medical departments and divisions within and outside of UW Medicine. This position also includes performing monthly and routine LIS maintenance. This position is responsible for ensuring accurate and appropriate configuration including lab result display in ancillary systems for all testing performed in the clinical laboratories for major medical facilities: the University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, Northwest Hospital and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. In addition, this position is responsible for implementing, integrating, and supporting LIS application interface and other application features that will maximize smooth laboratory operations. This position supports UW Medicine’s and the University of Washington’s primary objectives by ensuring accurate laboratory results for educational, research purposes and patients in our community as well as those from other states.
Operational:
Manage the Laboratory Information System (LIS) application interfaces for several major medical laboratory facilities including the University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, Northwest Hospital and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.
Maintain and manage current application interfaces including building any needed modifications, testing and validating for ancillary system software version updates as well as LIS upgrades.
Build and modify the following: test, battery and package definitions, primary and aliquot specimen tube definitions, routing for specimens throughout all laboratory facilities to ensure specimens are routed to the appropriate specimen containers and the performing laboratory.
Build other LIS requirements that includes, but is not limited to, lab locations, lab worksheets, result calculations to ensure accurately reported results, printers, barcode label devices, both patient location index and physician index for the University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, Northwest Hospital and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance,
Assist with other updates to the LIS, including routine test maintenance and software overlays.
Coordinate LIS and associated applications updates and other needed changes with multiple IT groups from all of our different electronic health record systems, billing systems and ancillary systems including, but not limited to, ORCA, Epic, Mindscape, Soarian, MayoAccess, Docusys, Theradoc, IDEV and Xifin. This includes facilitating and testing monthly updates and changes to order and result code builds as well as validating appropriate result display in the clinical information systems above.
Guide and assist all laboratory divisions in assessing the impact of changes to the system and in developing appropriate operational procedures to ensure database integrity by utilizing change control practices.
Monitor the LIS database integrity and evaluating the impact of changes to the database.
Manage and monitor LIS system security. This includes setting up and monitoring over 1000 user accounts for both Laboratory Medicine and affiliated laboratory staff. Annual review all LIS user accounts.
Create and maintain documentation for processes and procedures as well as regulatory requirements including, but not limited to, CAP, DOH, CLIA, HIPAA and FDA.
Create and maintain user training materials as well as assist in training new informatics staff members.
Troubleshoot and resolve user and LIS problems and issues which directly affect patient care. Due to the wide array of potential problems, users must have familiarity with all facets of departmental work. This includes internal lab workflows, clinical practices related lab orders and results, interface design and functionality, network and security structure, and the overall design of the LIS.
Resolve user computer, software and network problems. Report application or network problems to appropriate sources which may include Laboratory Medicine department heads, UW ITS, CIS, UWMC and HMC Administration, as well as analysts from all UW Medicine ancillary systems including, but not limited to, ORCA, Epic, Mindscape, Soarian and IDEV.
Resolve LIS user production and test area access issues.
Projects and Development:
Implement new application interfaces which includes building, making necessary modification to meet the requirements of the ancillary application as well as testing and validating the interfaces with ancillary systems.
Work with other UW Medicine affiliated clinical system analysts on LIS or other clinical application projects including, but not limited to, ORCA, Epic, Mindscape, Soarian, MayoAccess, Docusys, Theradoc, IDEV and Xifin.
Assist users in all Laboratory Medicine divisions as well as users outside of the department, including, but not limited to, Northwest Hospital, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and UW Medicine Neighbor Clinics in determining how the LIS can best meet their needs.
Assist with annual or biannual LIS software version upgrades.
Perform project analysis for major software upgrades, minor software updates, and product liability alerts.
Work with departmental project managers to coordinate with outside departments and divisions for implementation of major software upgrades, minor software updates, and product liability alerts.
Work with internal or external department project teams on a wide variety of system improvements and software changes as a subject matter experts for all aspects related to Laboratory Medicine and the LIS. This includes but not limited to analyzing and documenting existing lab operations, customer/business needs, technical requirements, and system designs.
Design and implement new system designs to meet the objectives and business needs stated in the project charter, meet project deadlines and communicate effectively with all members of the project team including executive sponsors and project managers when required.
Test and evaluate the impact of software modifications and any required updates to laboratory operations and coordinate the implementation of major software upgrades not only for the LIS but also for any ancillary systems including, but not limited to, ORCA, Epic, Mindscape, Soarian, MayoAccess, Docusys, Theradoc, IDEV and Xifin as well as outside clients.

On-Call and Routine System Support:
On call rotation responsibilities are 24/7 on a rotating weekly schedule. During the on call rotation, this position is the primary point of contact for LIS user issues, problems and incidents for over 1000 LIS users throughout UW Medicine and affiliated medical center laboratories as well as UW Medicine’s ancillary clinical system analysts including, but not limited to, ORCA, Epic, Mindscape, Soarian and IDEV. Also during the on call rotation, this position is responsible to report clinical incidents and outage alerts to the UWMC and HMC Administrators On Call.
When not on call, this position will be an alternate point of contact for issues not resolved by the on call person.
Coordinate with analysts from other UW Medicine medical systems including, but not limited to, ORCA, Epic, Mindscape, Soarian, and IDEV to resolve user, result display and other issues. Understand and identify situations which require escalation to departmental and clinical administration.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in science or related field
- 2-3 years of Laboratory HL7 & application interface experience
- or equivalent education and experience
Desired Requirements:
Experience with application interface engines and middleware.
Clinical information systems experience.
Ability to work independently.
Lab regulatory requirements.
Conditions of Employment:
It will be necessary to work in other departmental locations in order to meet patient service requirements, especially at Harborview Medical Center. In addition, less frequent work effort will be required at other UW School of Medicine locations (e.g., South Lake Union) and Seattle-area healthcare institutions.
Will be considered essential staff and as such will be required to report to work when scheduled despite inclement weather.
Must be able to meet with all shifts on a regular basis.
