UW Medicine Finance & Accounting has an outstanding opportunity for an Assistant Controller.  Under the direction of the UW Medicine (UWM) Controller, this individual will provide leadership in advancing integration activities across UW Medicine Accounting, including but not limited to: successful integration of Northwest Hospital with UW Medical Center; design and implementation of the Workday system for the UW Medicine entities as part of the UW Finance Transformation (UWFT) initiative; effective support for the Destination:One (D:1), and further consolidation of the various decentralized accounting functions across the enterprise. The Assistant Controller serves as an advisor to the UW Medicine entities' leadership in financial matters and plays a lead role in assuring the quality and timeliness of the accounting and financial reporting as well as providing outstanding support to management and staff in achieving the mission of UWM.

This individual is a key member of the UW Medicine Finance Team, working very closely with the UWM and Entity leadership to provide relevant and timely policy and advisory support to UWM. 


Accounting & Financial Reporting
  • Provides senior level leadership over major aspects of the UW Medicine Accounting and Financial Reporting functions.  Assists UW Medicine leadership and management in exercising appropriate oversight of accounting and control related responsibilities.
  • Provides senior leadership for the planning, scheduling and execution of the annual Medical Center audits with the independent external auditors, Internal Audit, the State auditor’s office and others as required.  Assures organizational attention to improving processes to eliminate non-compliant processes.  Works collaboratively with UW Medicine Compliance Office to identify and mitigate risks.
  • Provides subject matter expertise on accounting issues.  In collaboration with the Financial Reporting team, maintains an up-to-date and anticipatory knowledge of prospective accounting, compliance and reporting changes and ensures UW Medicine policies and procedures are compliant.
  • In collaboration with the Financial Reporting team, ensures compliant tax accounting and reporting for the enterprise, including annual IRS Form 990 filing as well as remittance and rebate for Sales and Use Tax and B&O Tax where appropriate.

  • Integration & Process Improvement
  • Works with Finance leadership in developing strategies, goals and priorities for improving the infrastructure, systems, and organizational construct for the Accounting and Financial Reporting functions, continuing a focus on furthering the centralized model for Accounting Services.  Under the direction of the UWM Controller, provides leadership for projects and initiatives across the enterprise that are intended to further the coordination, consistency, quality, and efficiency of Accounting and Financial Reporting processes.
  • Helps to establish and maintain consolidated business systems and standard policies across operational and business units within the clinical enterprise. Works to ensure that the quality of the business systems provide optimal support to management and staff and is consistent with furthering the long term strategy for UW Medicine.
  • Service Level: Ensures standards, practices and policies for providing timely, accurate and relevant Accounting and Financial Reporting services to UW Medicine are adhered to.

  • Prepares annual operating and capital budgets for departments supervised.  Monitors spending against budget and manages within plan.
  • Prepares and presents written and verbal reports to executive management, Finance Committees, and governing Boards as requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Master's degree in Accounting, Business, or related field
  • In-depth knowledge of hospital accounting and current in new regulations and trends
  • At least six-to-eight (6-8) years of experience as a senior financial management professional.  Large hospital or health system experience required.  Academic Medical Center experience strongly preferred. 
  • Very strong understanding of GAAP and GASB Accounting standards
  • CPA strongly preferred
  • Record of success in operating within a complex organization.  Record of strong analytical skills being practically applied.  Strong collaborative working style.
  • Strong understanding of the University financial systems and the flow of data between the University and the Medical Center strongly preferred.
