The School of Law has an outstanding opportunity for an Assistant Dean for Development and External Relations
The position of Assistant Dean for Development and External Relations provides overall direction for the advancement efforts of the School of Law by providing leadership, management and services that influence and support the mission and goals of the School of Law. This role includes direction, oversight and responsibility for programs, activities and initiatives that attract private support, enhance relationship building with key internal and external constituencies, and promote volunteerism on behalf of the School.
This role works within the University of Washington’s integrated advancement model. While it does not have direct supervisory responsibility for the School’s marketing and communications and event functions, there is a close partnership between these roles and the leader of that unit.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership and Team management
Provide leadership and manage the School of Law Advancement & External Affairs team in collaboration with the Dean of the School of Law.
* Provide program leadership, drawing on significant team leadership and fundraising/external affairs experience.
* Manage the day-to-day operations of the Advancement and External Affairs team.
* Create and manage the budget of the Advancement and External Affairs team with discretionary authority.
* Manage a team of professionals who will build strong and mutually beneficial relationships between the School (its Dean, faculty and staff) and external audiences such as donors, alumni, and business and community leaders.
* Responsible for management, staff development and career enrichment for the School of Law Advancement and External Affairs team.
Strategy Development
As part of the University-wide Advancement planning process, and with the guidance of the Dean, create and manage to measurable goals, objectives and strategies for the School’s advancement activities. Regularly evaluate programs, assess progress toward goals and objectives, and report to the Dean and Vice President.
Facilitate and manage partnerships and shared resources with central advancement, including Development Programs.
Integrate and jointly coordinate marketing efforts with University Marketing and Communications and alumni engagement with Alumni and Stakeholder Engagement/UWAA.
Fundraising
Partner with the Dean in developing a focused set of core fundraising priorities that advance the mission and strategic direction of the School. Significant increases, in a sustainable manner, in private support for the School are expected, building on the strong foundation that has been laid.
Focus the School's development and related advancement activities on pro-active relationship building and securing major gifts ($50,000 and above), while also insuring a robust pipeline to support sustainable growth. Insure fundraisers are focused on effective prospective donor engagement strategies, and are accountable to UW Advancement’s established protocols and metrics.
Personally manage a portfolio of major gift prospective donors. Develop and implement cultivation and solicitation strategies for each assigned prospect based on established metrics. With the Advancement team, prepare written proposals, informational materials, endowment agreements and other communications needed to secure major gifts. Participate cooperatively in the University's prospect management and tracking system.
Program Development
Provide thoughtful and creative leadership and management for the Advancement and External Affairs team. Direct and implement all aspects of the School of Law's advancement program; including annual gifts, major and planned gifts, corporate and foundation support, donor recognition and stewardship, alumni services and programs, advancement-focused communications and publications and general external relations activities.
As appropriate or necessary to serve the School's private fundraising efforts, coordinate and oversee the Advancement and External Affairs team’s interaction with volunteer committees and boards; e.g. the Leadership Council and its committees. Identify, recruit and train volunteers, and involve them in the School's advancement activities. Build strong and mutually beneficial relationships between the School (its Dean, faculty and staff) and external audiences such as donors, alumni, and business and community leaders.
Develop and implement for internal and external constituencies a communications plan that will promote the private fundraising priorities and objectives of the School of Law. Oversee production of advancement communications, including social media, video communications, electronic outreach, brochures, reports, solicitation letters, newsletters, etc. Oversee planning for the School's development and advancement events (e.g. reunions, tailgate events, PILA auction, and town hall lectures and discussions.)
Campaign Planning
Orchestrate campaign planning including feasibility, infrastructure development, volunteer officer identification/ recruitment, prospect prioritization, internal communication and coordination, and case definition and positioning in support of the School of Law and University priorities. Actively steward and build on the success of past campaigns to support future multi-million-dollar endeavors in future campaigns.

REQUIREMENTS
A bachelor’s degree and at least eight to ten years of progressively responsible experience in institutional development/advancement, with an emphasis on cultivating and soliciting major gifts. Equivalent combination of comparable knowledge and skills may substitute for education and/or experience.
Experience managing and developing staff and/or teams, with a demonstrated track record as a successful fundraiser, preferably in higher education, with management, budgeting and operational experience.
A thorough appreciation for strategic academic planning and its relationship to the effective application of basic fund-raising principles. Ability to understand and articulate academic values, and work collaboratively with faculty, administration, staff, students, and alumni. Ability to convey complex academic needs and priorities to potential donors accurately, understandably, and persuasively.
Ability to coordinate, enable, and build upon the work of a volunteer fundraising group composed largely of high-level professionals from across the United States and across the legal spectrum.
Ability to analyze data to make strategic decisions and measure outcomes.
Demonstrated strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for correspondence, special reports, spreadsheets, online communications, and forms.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
An advanced degree in a relevant field is preferred.
Fundraising experience in a complex higher education setting, including principles derived from PlusDelta Partners training programs.
Strong personnel and budget management experience or ability.
Self-motivation with enormous energy and a capacity for hard work within an intensely goal-oriented environment.
Superior interpersonal skills, working equally comfortably and effectively with scholars, administration, professional and administrative staff, and alumni.
Knowledge of the integrated advancement model. Knowledge of alumni and stakeholder engagement/development/marketing and communication principles.
Knowledge of UW Advancement policies and procedures, including use of the development database software ADVANCE.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Ability to work evening and weekend hours, as necessary, on short or limited notice.
Must have regular and reliable transportation for local travel and willing to travel when necessary.
Frequent local, regional and international travel expected.
