College of Education has an outstanding opportunity for an Assistant Director for Graduate Student Services.

The Office of Student Services (OSS) in the College of Education serves as the central office of support for undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty and staff.  Services provided include but are not limited to advising for prospective and current students, degree completion, registration troubleshooting, professional and career development, and helping to connect students to resources.

Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Academic & Student Affairs, the Assistant Director works as a member of the Office of Student Services team to provide an extensive and broad-reaching system of support to prospective students, applicants, current students and faculty.  The Assistant Director will assume a leadership role in the office through a set of responsibilities that includes:
  •   Counseling current graduate studies students (Master of Education, Educational Specialist, Doctor of Education, and Doctor of Philosophy) concerning degree requirements, procedures, and resources (including courses, registration, degree milestones, funding, and referrals to other UW offices and services) in a way that complements and supports the academic advising work of the faculty;
  • Managing the cultivation of contacts with prospective graduate students and recruitment for MEd, EdS, and doctoral programs, in collaboration with staff and faculty in the College’s graduate programs and partners;
  • Supervising graduate students, providing leadership, and ensuring functional office operations (schedules, budgets, etc.) for the Office of Student Diversity and Inclusion (OSDI) as it promotes community and services for historically marginalized student populations;
  • Developing strategic recruitment plans for graduate studies programs, and overseeing the implementation of those plans, including in-person and online information sessions;
  • Coordinating professional and career development activities for students in the College’s MEd, EdS, and doctoral programs, with particular attention to students of color, international students, and other student populations that are underrepresented in the pursuit of graduate studies.
  • Collaborating with faculty and staff to improve graduate student experiences both in and out of the classroom, with particular attention to issues around climate.

    The Assistant Director will lead efforts to attend to the professional, academic, and personal growth of graduate students. An important function of the position is to enhance the experience of prospective and current graduate students, with an emphasis on increasing recruitment and retention of high-caliber graduate students, including students of color, international students, and other student populations that are underrepresented in the pursuit of graduate studies.

    Duties & Responsibilities
    Essential functions of the position include understanding and conveying information about multiple graduate programs; interpreting interests of prospective students and determining congruence of those interests with those graduate programs and with faculty research agendas;   understanding student concerns and determining appropriate courses of action to resolve those concerns (including referrals); and understanding and conveying information about relevant University policies.
  • Through individual consultation, workshops, and printed materials, communicate information to graduate students and faculty on status and degree completion steps, deadlines, and requirements; refer graduate students to their faculty advisors when appropriate.
  • Manage the cultivation of contacts with prospective graduate students and recruitment for MEd and doctoral programs, this includes responses to programmatic questions from prospective graduate students and graduate non-matriculated (GNM) students; oversight of the planning, coordination, promotion, and implementation of graduate program information sessions for prospective students, and managing organizational partnerships related to outreach.
  • Hire, train, and supervise the graduate student staff assistants of the Office of Student Diversity & Inclusion and lead the work of that office in promoting community and services for historically marginalized student populations.
  • Work with students to resolve unique problems or situations as appropriate; provide appropriate referrals to other College and UW resources/offices as needed; liaison with the Graduate School, the Registrar, International Student Services, and others as appropriate to assist students and resolve problems;
  • Develop, coordinate, plan, promote, and execute professional and personal development programs, including individual consultation and mentoring where appropriate;
  • Identify issues and concerns of graduate students and work collaboratively to develop strategies and initiatives to address those concerns, with a focus on graduate student experiences both in and out of the classroom, and with particular attention to issues around climate
  • Collaborate with other Student Services staff to plan, promote, and execute annual events, including orientation, open houses, community events, and graduation.
  • Collaborate with College marketing and communications staff in the development of graduate recruitment materials, including OSDI brochure;
  • Assume shared responsibility for assessing and modifying/updating website content related to graduate student degree progress;
  • Coordinate Research & Inquiry presentations, including registration and event planning;
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

    Requirements
  • Master’s degree in education, social sciences, or a related field, to include  five years of experience working with students in an advisory, recruiting, or counseling capacity.
  • Knowledge of effective recruiting and retention practices to increase diversity, as well as the ability to develop and implement new initiatives in this area.
  • Demonstrated ability to use relational databases, web-based technologies, and an ability to integrate these technologies into educational and student-support environments.

    Additional Qualifications
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills, including experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access), Google Suite, relational databases, multi-user calendaring systems, online communications (email and instant messaging).
  • Prior supervisory experience.

    Desired
  • Knowledge of the field of education as a discipline of study.  
  • Ability to design, implement, and maintain workflow systems that lead to greater effectiveness and efficiency. 
  • Familiarity with policies and procedures of the University of Washington and/or the UW College of Education. 
  • Graduate degree in education or a related field of study. 
  • Experience in academic advising, recruiting, and/or admissions. 
  • Ability to multitask in a fast paced environment.
  • Sensitivity and ability to handle highly confidential information.
