The Assistant Director of Finance administers the financial operations and payroll for both the Department of Neurological Surgery and the Department of Neurology. This position reports to the Director of the Department and is part of the senior management team of both departments. They are responsible for all departmental fiscal operations, contract management processes, financial reporting, payroll operations, and purchasing and procurement. They manage the associated personnel in these areas as well. The Assistant Director has delegated responsibility for ensuring that fiscal policies and practices within the Departments meet all regulatory and compliance requirements.
The Assistant Director must have a high degree of financial and analytical skills, drawing on a strong foundation of financial and accounting principles within a complex organizational environment. The Assistant Director must possess advanced accounting and data analysis skills, and be extremely confident in applying high level finance functions in Excel. This individual must understand, forecast, organize and oversee the management of two SoM Department fiscal operations, including payroll, reporting activities, purchasing and procurement. These responsibilities span across the spectrum of multiple funding sources, including, clinical services, grants and contracts, gifts, and State funding. The Assistant Director is the departmental expect regarding appropriate resource allocation and stewardship within approved fiduciary practices, and provides direction and expertise to faculty and staff on fiscal aspects within the Departments. In addition, the Assistant Director must be able to communicate the financial data and scenarios clearly and concisely to the Leadership team.
The Assistant Director of Finance must be able to synthesize current facts and circumstances, and develop, propose, and implement solutions that will achieve compliance and financial stability.
This role is particularly complex because of the depth and breadth of knowledge required to manage all forms of budgets, and expenses, as well as balance the demands of multiple departments. The Associate Director needs to understand the various policies and procedures that apply to both department's diverse research, clinical, and teaching initiatives and advises the Director on complex UW and State policies and practices. Additionally, both departments, while similar, have independent cultures, policies and processes. The Assistant Director must be able to understand and seamlessly navigate between the two.
