The UW Department of Biological Structure has an excellent opportunity for an Assistant to the Chair.
The Department of Biological Structure is a modern anatomy department which studies structural organization ranging from molecules to the human body. The faculty's scholarly interests can be roughly divided into four groups: (1) cell and developmental biology; (2) neural circuits in the retina and brain; (3) three-dimensional structure of biologically-relevant molecules studied by X-ray crystallography; (4) and computer graphics and informatics.
The research activity in the department is funded by NIH and NSF grants, private foundation grants, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, USDA and a contract from the National Library of Medicine. Most faculty members interact with other faculty, residents and students within Biological Structure as well as with groups in other departments throughout the University. This creates a stimulating atmosphere which encourages innovative anatomical research with basic and clinical implications.
Biological Structure teaches gross anatomy, histology and neuroanatomy to medical, dental, graduate, undergraduate and some health-care professional students. Many of the research groups are actively engaged in the development of computer-based learning programs and methods to further enhance and enlarge our teaching mission.
The Assistant to the Chair serves as the primary contact for academic human resource issues including oversight and management of all aspects of faculty searches, academic research and tenured faculty appointments and promotions, and affiliate, adjunct and visiting faculty appointments and reappointments. Given the wide range of activities the Chairperson is involved in, this position requires independent decision making and the ability to prioritize workflows according to the Chairperson's needs. The position manages the Chair's calendar, correspondence, and other arrangements, thus it requires a variety of skills, flexibility, and the ability to learn new processes quickly. Utilizing analytical skills and professional knowledge, the incumbent assesses the functionality of tasks and addresses strategic goals to operationalize them in systematic ways. The Assistant to the Chair is also responsible for coordination of the Department's seminar speakers' series, and facilitating other departmental events and speakers.
