University Advancement has an outstanding opportunity for an Associate Director, Business Development.
The Associate Director, Business Development is responsible for managing multiple University of Washington Alumni Association (UWAA) operations connected to business-related revenue generation. This work includes generating and managing key community partnerships, sponsorships, and advertising with an emphasis on increasing revenue streams beyond current levels of $700,000 in annual operating revenue and $150,000 of in-kind support.
This Associate Director will identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward external strategic relationships and partnerships in order to generate revenue, manage operating expenses, and enhance the UWAA brand. This position interacts extensively with internal and external audiences and stakeholders, and requires skill and experience in resolving multiple interests to reach positive conclusions. While the position reports to the Assistant Vice President, Marketing and Communications, it works closely and collaboratively with the Assistant Vice President, Alumni and Constituent Relations; ASE Marketing and Communications staff; and ASE Engagement staff.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Program Development and Management
• Direct all aspects of the UWAA sponsorship program including the expansion, maintenance, stewardship, reporting, and fulfillment of existing corporate event and program sponsorship agreements
• Work with sponsor representatives in conjunction with key ASE and UMAC stakeholders to develop creative and growth-oriented annual program strategies
• Ensure contractual fulfillment of affinity and sponsor engagement deliverables through collaboration and coordination with UW and ASE stakeholders
• Ensure contractual fulfillment of affinity and sponsor marketing and promotional deliverables through collaboration and coordination with ASE marketing staff
• Achieve annual revenue projections for sponsorship programs and track revenue to ensure projections are being met
• Ensure sponsorship partners comply with institutional and unit policies and procedures with regard to non-profit status, trademarks and licensing, confidentiality, and privacy
• Assist with contract negotiations for current and new sponsorship programs, consulting with the legal services team when appropriate
• Ensure that sponsor payments are secured and processed through Advancement F&A, and provide support, information, or documentation as necessary to support annual audits or F&A inquiries
Strategic Planning and Modeling
• Build and maintain a model for external partnerships that reflects current industry standards and accommodates future opportunities and growth
• Strategize short- and long-term plans for sponsors of all levels and across all platforms at UWAA
• Collaborate with the UW’s Sponsorship Office to maximize opportunities and ensure compliance with university policies and institutional partner agreements
• Provide information on sponsorship programs to UWAA and University staff, and collaborate to elevate expectations, deliverables, and outcomes
Sponsorship/Partnership Identification and Solicitation
• Oversee development and acquisition of new event and program sponsors, including the production and negotiation of sponsorship proposals, under the guidance of the UWAA Executive Director and UWAA Assistant Vice Presidents
• Prospect, cultivate, and negotiate terms as the primary liaison for new sponsorship partners
• Identify and coordinate broad based engagement opportunities for partners at UWAA and/or UW events

REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communication, Business or related field and five years of experience in sponsorship, marketing, customer focused leadership position or related field. Equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may substitute for degree.
• Experience managing business professionals in the client role, especially in a for-profit environment.
• Demonstrated strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for correspondence, special reports, spreadsheets, databases, forms, etc.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE
• Knowledge of the integrated advancement model. Knowledge of alumni relations/development/advancement principles.
• Knowledge of UW Advancement policies and procedures, including use of the development database software ADVANCE.
Conditions of Employment
• Cubicle/Open workspace environment which may result in additional or higher levels of noise and visual distractions.
• Ability to work evening and weekend hours, as necessary, on short or limited notice.
• Must have regular and reliable transportation for local travel and willing to travel when necessary.
• Frequent local travel expected.
• A valid Washington State driver’s license is required to operate the UW Alumni Association Van. Candidate selected must have personal transportation and be willing to travel when necessary.
• Ability to lift 20 pounds regularly and up to 40 pounds occasionally for event setup and tear down.
During Events (from setup to tear down) or on Event days:
• Ability to stand 4 or more hours continuously.
• Ability to walk 4 or more hours continuously.
• Ability Standing: duration of 4+ hours for events
• Ability to work greater than a 10 hour day
Ability to travel out-of-state up to 10 times per year for events scheduled on evenings and weekends
Ability to travel internationally up to 2 times per year to perform duties and responsibilities as a UWAA Alumni Travel Program tour host.
