The College of Arts & Sciences and University Advancement has an outstanding opportunity for an part-time Associate Director for Advancement for Natural Sciences.
The part-time Associate Director for Advancement for Natural Sciences position works with the Senior Director for Advancement for the Natural Sciences, the Associate Dean for Advancement, academic leaders, department chairs and faculty, volunteers, and other advancement staff to actively identify potential donors, cultivate and nurture positive external relationships, and solicit major gifts of $50,000 or more to support private funding initiatives. The Associate Director may supervise formally or informally a Constituency Relations Officer and/or interns to support the advancement work in their assigned departments.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES
Frontline Fundraising
The part-time Associate Director is primarily charged with identifying, cultivating, soliciting, negotiating, and stewarding major gifts starting at $50,000. The majority of the Associate Director’s time is focused on gifts from individuals; however, the position also may require interaction with corporation and foundation entities.
In addition, the Associate Director will:
Manage a portfolio of 75 major gift prospects capable of making gifts of $50,000 or more.
Make at least 40 substantive contacts each year with those prospects in their portfolio. Identify major gift prospects. Develop and implement a solicitation strategy for each assigned major gift prospect. In addition, conduct 10 qualification contacts each year to continually build a pipeline for future major gift prospects.
Solicit a minimum of 6 major gifts each year.
Prepare written proposals, informational materials, endowment agreements, gift illustrations and other materials needed to secure major gifts. Participate cooperatively in the University’s prospect management and tracking system.
Proactively reach out to qualify leads through cold calls and emails to qualify / disqualify 10 new prospects each year. Identify engagement opportunities for these new relationships.
Work with the Sr. Director for Advancement for the Natural Sciences to develop gift strategies to engage cold relationships and move them through the donor commitment continuum to a gift conversation.
Coordinate the participation of administrators, academic leaders, volunteers and advancement staff in major gift fundraising activities.
In consultation with the Sr. Director for Advancement for the Natural Sciences, establish personal goals, objectives and strategies for major gift fundraising.
Participate in assessing progress toward goals.
Work cooperatively with staff in the Principal Giving, Regional Giving, Planned
Giving and Corporate and Foundation Relations in preparing solicitation strategies for assigned prospects in portfolio.
Plan, assign and review the work of support staff for the major gift program.
Responsibilities require considerable professional independence, personal initiative, and the ability to effectively and quickly respond to a variety of situations involving University constituencies.
Support the Sr. Director for Advancement, Divisional Dean and the volunteer advisory boards in their advancement efforts on behalf of the College when necessary.
Seek appropriate training opportunities, including training necessary for proficiency in the use of gift planning techniques.
Provide major gift fundraising training opportunities for advancement staff, academic leaders and volunteers when needed.
Submit regular reports to the Sr. Director for Advancement for the Natural Sciences.
Other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received
This part-time position reports to the Sr. Director for Advancement for the Natural Sciences.
REQUIREMENTS
A bachelor’s degree and at least five years of progressively responsible experience in institutional development/advancement, with an emphasis on cultivating and soliciting major gifts. Equivalent development/advancement experience outside of higher education may substitute for educational institution experience. Documented fundraising success in previous positions required.
Proficiency using PC computers. Demonstrated strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for correspondence, special reports, spreadsheets, databases, forms, etc.
Demonstrated ability to establish, cultivate and steward strong relationships with donors and friends to build and maintain lifelong partnerships and trust while aligning the donor’s passions and goals with the institution.
Intrinsically motivated and able to create innovative ideas to achieve results. Recognizes and seizes opportunities.
Ability to develop fundraising strategies and plans that integrate into the organization’s mission, priorities and goals both independently and collaboratively within a team.

DESIRED
Advanced degree in a relevant field.
Previous experience cultivating and soliciting annual and/or major gifts is preferred.
Knowledge of alumni relations/development/advancement principles.
Knowledge of UW Advancement policies and procedures, including use of the development database software ADVANCE.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Ability to work evening and weekend hours, as necessary, on short or limited notice.
Must have regular and reliable transportation for local travel and willing to travel when necessary.
Frequent local travel expected.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
