University Advancement, UW Libraries has an outstanding opportunity for an Associate Director for Advancement.
POSITION PURPOSE
The Associate Director for Advancement, as a member of the Libraries Advancement team, will assist in planning, managing and directing the Libraries advancement activities and efforts to secure gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations. Responsibilities require extensive direct contact with the Libraries diverse internal and external audiences; include alumni, friends, major donors, faculty, staff and volunteers. To fulfill the duties of this position, the Associate Director interacts directly with high-end annual and major gift donors and prospects. The purpose of this position is to achieve fundraising goals through personal visits and customized solicitation strategies with key donors.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES
Frontline Fundraising
Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major gift prospects, including individuals, corporations and foundations. Provide strategic leadership to Libraries staff in designing and implementing advancement programs needed to sustain gift support.
Manage a large portfolio of prospects with the potential of becoming high-end annual major and planned gift prospects and increasing the number by at least 10% each year. Solicit and close gifts at all levels ($1,000+, Dean’s Circle), focusing on $25,000+ and with a stretch goal on gifts between $100,000 - $500,000.
Coordinate the participation of and provide relevant training for librarians, curators, volunteers and development staff in fundraising activities.
Prepare written proposals, informational materials, endowment agreements, stewardship materials, gift illustrations and other materials needed to secure gifts and steward relationships.
Plan and implement the Libraries corporate and foundation relations fundraising program. Partner with Libraries staff to identify, write and submit private (non-government) foundation grants. Communicate a compelling value proposition to corporate partners. Prepare background and briefing papers for all relevant parties as necessary.
In consultation with the Assistant Dean for Libraries Advancement, annually establish personal goals, objectives and strategies for gift fundraising, and regularly assess progress toward goals.
Participate cooperatively in the University’s prospect management and tracking system.
Work cooperatively with staff, the University's central development, Planned Giving, Corporate and Foundation Relations, and Annual Giving in donor cultivation and solicitation.
Discovery
Proactively reach out to qualify Libraries leads through cold calls and emails making 5 substantial contacts per week and an average of 1-2 visits per week. Solicit individual prospective donors when appropriate and qualify major gift prospects to proactively cultivate future gifts.
In collaboration with the Board of Directors of the Friends of the UW Libraries, develop and leverage strategic “discovery” activities, including events and publications and other community building projects to create continuous connections with and financial support from library constituents, particularly Friends of the Library members. Utilize event attendance lists to cultivate relationships with those who have the potential of becoming major gift prospects.
Qualify major ($25,000+) and planned gift prospects from research, prospect tracking tools, donor base, and fundraising colleagues.
Work in partnership with the Assistant Dean for Advancement and Assistant Director for Advancement to develop techniques to begin cold relationships and move them through the donor cycle by cultivating these relationships to gifts conversion.
Professionally and clearly, articulate the Libraries vision and funding priorities in all communications.
Work with front-line fundraising colleagues in Libraries, Regional Advancement, Corporate & Foundation Relations and Planned Giving to develop and support strategies for activities and special events for qualification and solicitation efforts.
Responsible for prospect/donor call coordination and briefing materials associated with activities for potential major donors for the Libraries.
Volunteer Management
Assist Assistant Dean with recruitment and onboarding of volunteers for Libraries Advancement committees.
Serve as primary liaison with Friends of the UW Libraries Board. Organize and coordinate announcements and meetings for Friends Board and Executive Committee.

REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree and four years’ experience of progressively responsible experience in institutional development/advancement, with an emphasis on cultivating and soliciting major gifts. Equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may substitute for degree.
Proficiency using PC computers. Demonstrated strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for correspondence, special reports, spreadsheets, databases, forms, etc.
DESIRED
Knowledge of the University of Washington and its schools and colleges, alumni relations, development and advancement principles.
Fundraising experience in a higher education setting and general knowledge of corporate and foundation fundraising and gift planning vehicles are desirable.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Ability to work evening and weekend hours, as necessary, on short or limited notice.
Must have regular and reliable transportation for local travel and willing to travel when necessary.
Frequent local travel expected.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
