Harborview Medical Center's Department of Social Work has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR to provide leadership, management and coordination of clinical units ensuring efficient and effective patient care. This position will support Social Work operations under Inpatient Psychiatry, the Emergency Department, and various clinics (except the Madision Clinic); and will be under the general direction of the Director of Social Work.

  • Service-area strategic planning and development, including clinical, teaching and research initiatives.
  • As applicable, departmental budget preparation and management, including operational needs.
  • Determine what data is most relevant to capturing Social Work activities and collaborate with Data Manager to implement, fine-tune and interpret reporting
  • As scheduled, attend Joint Labor Management meetings and participate in all employee disciplinary activity including grievances as applicable
  • Liaison with Human Resources, including maintaining a collaborative relationship with the personnel representative(s) responsible for Social Work
  • Oversee departmental compliance with regulatory responsibilities, including surveys, personnel records, credentialing, hospital-wide vaccination/infection control campaigns, and organizational competency evaluations
  • Represents the Department within UW Medicine and at large, including but not limited to committees, associations, and boards
  • Oversee recruiting, hiring and orientation and training of all service area Social Work staff working in all capacities; when multiple positions are vacant, provide the supervisor with recommendations and guidance
  • Track vacant positions and recruitment efforts
  • Encourages development of supervisory skills in areas of goal setting, clinical consultation, and comprehensive assessment of supervisees’ skills
  • Assesses service area need for group supervision and additional clinical training
  • Encourage staff to contribute to professional journals and associations
  • Support vendor and HMC compliance with all aspects of ratified contracts under the purview of Social Work, as delegated by the Director of Social Work
  • Clinical consultation to staff and direct provision of services to patients/families as indicated
  • Maintain a working knowledge of policies and practices affecting Social Work services in assigned care area(s)
  • Recommend and collaborate on the development of policies and procedures directing standards of practice in the service area(s)
  • Oversee the development and implementation of care plans in the assigned service area(s)
  • As assigned, provide 24/7 on-call clinical consultation
  • Support patient continuity and thoughtful resource utilization through the development and support of clinical programs bridging multiple patient care areas, such as Palliative Care, EMR/Destination One, and inpatient psychiatry
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives that bridge multiple patient care areas, such as  the Anesthesia & Sedation Pathway for Unescorted Patients and the Pre & Post-surgery Planning in Foot & Ankle and Spine Clinics
  • Continuously mitigate financial risk to HMC by activating multidisciplinary case review for unfunded and self-pay, elective patients via Social Work initiatives: Rapid Response Decision Team (RRDT) and the International Patient Program (IPP)
  • Oversee internship programs for social work students
  • Perform other duties as required

  • Master’s degree in Social Work from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education AND seven (7) years of full-time professional social work experience
  • Four (4) years of experience in a counseling or health care setting, including four (4) years of social work management experience at least two (2) of which must be in a health care setting
  • Experience with budgeting and data collection

    Active WA State Independent Clinical Social Worker license within one year of hire.
