The Environmental Health & Safety Department (EH&S) works in partnership with the University’s organizational units to meet occupational and environmental safety standards and provide a healthy and safe place of employment. This position will directly contribute to and be accountable for creating and sustaining a culture of service, accountability, and excellence within the Department. EH&S currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Business and Data Analyst.
Under the general direction of the UW EH&S Assistant Director for Planning & Administration, the Business and Data Analyst performs business and financial analysis, initiates and monitors process improvement methodologies and practices, provides department wide and section specific statistical and data analysis, and uses project management skills to support Department activities. This position serves as a key member of the Planning & Administration team, connects EH&S to central administration data sources, and provides analytical support in operational areas. The successful candidate will maintain key metrics and drivers for the department and produce information that can be used to make strategic and operational recommendations and decisions. The scope of analysis encompasses financial data, budget information, business processes, and section service levels and capacity. The work performed informs and directly impacts management strategies, policies, business operations, and resource allocations.
The individual in this position creates and maintains a broad array of metrics and key performance indicators that provide business, operational and strategic insights. This position requires a commitment to exceptional service, the ability to adapt to changing environments, and the aptitude to work collaboratively with technically trained EH&S staff members as well as University community members (faculty, staff, and students) with varied business and analytical skills. Working in a fast paced, dynamic, deadline driven environment, the ideal candidate will exhibit outstanding individual initiative, project management skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects efficiently and effectively by setting priorities and organizing work. Working independently and as part of a dedicated, professional management team, this position must exercise discretion, good judgment, and tact when handling confidential materials and addressing sensitive matters.
All EH&S staff are expected to demonstrate the highest level of professionalism, ethical conduct, collaboration, and customer service in the execution of their duties. The successful candidate will become familiar with the mission, vision, strategic objectives, policies and procedures affecting the Department and Health Sciences Administration (HSA). EH&S interacts regularly with HSA and the University’s organizational units (academic, operational, administrative, clinical and research), as well as external regulatory entities (e.g., WA Department of Health, Department of Ecology, National Institutes of Health, WA Dept. of Labor and Industries, etc.).
The ideal candidate must be organized and able to quickly learn the organizational structures, communication dynamics, and service requirements impacting our Department, partner entities and populations served. This position provides excellent analytical services, supports the EH&S strategic planning process, and contributes to a positive work environment. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the on-going mission and strategic plan of the Department, providing accurate and reliable information in support of sound data-driven decisions. This position ensures EH&S initiatives are aligned with those articulated by Health Sciences Administration and the University of Washington’s central administration.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Analysis and Reporting
- Extract, format, and transform statistics and data into meaningful information
- Provide statistical and data analysis specific to programs, services, and activities
- Develop key EH&S department and section indicators, with particular attention to strategic planning and metrics development
- Manage EH&S metrics and reporting processes, including creating, monitoring, and coordinating metrics and dashboards linked to the EH&S Strategic Plan, Health Sciences Administration Strategy Map, transforming administrative processes, (TAP) and other UW initiatives
- Develop systems and tools to collect and analyze financial, accounting, academic, and service delivery information. Examples include databases, spreadsheets, and computer modeling techniques
- Develop and implement evaluation methodologies that provide decision support to EH&S leadership in the financial reporting, risk management, and training functions
- Analyze fiscal, service provision, and business process information; design and develop computer models, databases, and spreadsheets; and prepare compelling narrative and analytical reports using aesthetic design layouts for presentation and distribution to internal sections, University departments, outside organizations, and the public
- Research issues and recommend actions for financial and operational policy development and analysis
- Demonstrated ability to maintain and improve the quality and integrity of data collected for management decision-making
- Demonstrated ability to make data quality improvement recommendations
Strategic Planning, Process Improvement, and Project Management
- Coordinate complex collaborative projects involving business processes, service evaluation, and process improvement strategies
- Analyze findings, answer data inquiries, identify areas requiring improvement, and pursue efficient methods and processes
- Provide policy and process recommendations for improvements throughout the Department
- Develop informative service performance metrics for recommendation to the Leadership Team
- Apply knowledge of the University of Washington and EH&S to continually improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization; furnish decision makers with well-researched solutions to continual and non-recurring challenges facing the organization
- Provide information to the EH&S Senior Director and assistant directors on service provision, institutional risk, cost of service, return on investment, and alternative funding strategies
- Collaborate across EH&S program areas to establish best practices and strengthen relationships, recognizing the importance of functioning as a unified team
- Provide process-improvement recommendations

REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor's degree in finance, business, or a related field
• Five years of experience in business planning and financial analysis
• Expert proficiency with spreadsheets, word processing and databases in a Windows environment, including Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint
• Demonstrated ability to extract, format, and transform data into meaningful information and analyze results
• Experience developing metrics and dashboards
• Demonstrated ability to interpret and communicate complex policies, procedures, and business practices
• Experience understanding and communicating technical information to non-technical audiences
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written)
• Experience as a key contributor on complex collaborative projects involving business process evaluation and improvement
• Demonstrated ability to work independently with a high degree of reliability, accuracy and productivity
• Exercise independent judgment, professionalism and discretion regarding sensitive and confidential matters
• Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple projects with critical deadlines
• Experience developing, monitoring and reviewing new rate, fee, and budget proposals
• Comprehensive understanding of strategic planning, organization development, operational excellence, and project management concepts, principals and applications
• Experience with process improvement techniques
• Comfortable and effective in a culture of change and transition
• Experience evaluating data and service provision alternatives and assessing cost structures and cost recovery methodologies
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE
• Master’s degree in business, finance, informatics, or a related field
• Experience working in a large public sector environment
• Financial analysis and strategic planning experience in a major academic institution setting
• Knowledge of the UW’s financial, accounting, purchasing, HR, and payroll systems
• Proficiency working with University of Washington fiscal policies and procedures and administrative databases (Enterprise Data Warehouse, OPUS, BGT, PAS, Financial Desktop, Workday)
• Demonstrated ability to design, develop, document and maintain both decision-support data and applications to support information needs
• Proficient with Tableau, Power BI, and similar data presentation software
• Experience quantifying risk and return–on-investment alternatives; calculating probabilities; and developing methods to communicate risk/benefit expectations
• Basic understanding of database modeling concepts, including: relational database design principles, normalization rules, dimensional modeling principles, and data warehouse design principles
