The objective of UW Medicine Supply Chain Management is to ensure our patient care experience is enhanced by delivering a robust foundation of services, operational and technical support, and the sharing of comprehensive, relevant, and highly specialized supply chain management expertise.

UW Medicine Supply Chain Management Strategic Sourcing has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time, BUYER 2. Under supervision of the Manager of Acquisitions, the Buyer 2 will procure equipment, supplies, and services to meet departmental needs; conduct purchasing projects involving unique services and/or technical commodities; and utilize a variety of procurement methods for multi-commodity purchases and/or procurement of products. The Buyer is accountable for all transactions within their assigned area.

UW Medicine Supply Chain Buyers are assigned to teams that support specific divisions of the hospital. There are four divisions:  1.) Patient Care Services, 2.) Surgical Services,  3.) Finance, and 4.) MRO-Maintenance, Repair, and Operations.

Buyer 2 responsibilities:

Perform research and investigation for sources of supply by:
  • Locating, contacting, and interviewing via telephone and by personal visits potential vendors; monitoring the performance in a documentable fashion of existing vendors currently doing business with UW Medicine in such areas as quality of goods and quality of service to clients.
  • Monitoring and ensuring compliance with specifications and contract terms and after-sale support and follow-up.
  • Maintaining appropriate bid lists for those vendors providing acceptable service levels.
  • Assist as directed by the Manager of Acquisitions with soliciting vendor response by approved, procedural methods for specific competitive acquisitions; selecting the appropriate method, i.e., Request for Information, Requests for Proposal, telephone quotation, Request for Quotation, Request for Bid; direct negotiation; fully and completely documenting the reasons for process selection.
  • Under the direction of the Manager of Acquisitions, analyze bids for a divisional assignment purchase contracts products; recapping vendor responses when required in a clear, easy-to-understand fashion; audit responses according to established procedures; and select and present appropriate parties of the selection in a positive, concise fashion.

  • Procure goods to meet departmental needs by:
  • Coordinating with clients their requirements; participating in the drafting of technical specifications; recommending technical assistance; and proposing standardization of goods when appropriate.
  • Committing orders to vendors; preparing electronic purchase orders that are procedurally and grammatically correct; assuring contract and/or specification compliance; and devising evaluation tools to assist clients in selection of alternate products.

  • Maintain a high service level to our clients by:
  • Providing prompt, courteous response to inquiries, requests, and appointments.
  • Making priority application and assignment of preference rating to requests for purchases, contracts, and agreements.
  • Advising clients of existing or potential policies and/or procedures that may affect their requisitions.
  • Monitoring purchase orders and communicating status to relevant departments on a consistent basis.
  • Making regularly assigned visitations or participating as required in departmental presentations aimed at increasing communication/education goals.
  • Resolving any vendor performance problems.

  • Contribute to an effective, efficient Strategic Sourcing Department by:
  • Exhibiting a willingness to handle a fair share of the departmental workload as identified by management; participate as required in back-up and fill-in plans.
  • Surveying and analyzing procedures and procurement processes; prepare findings, report and recommend improvements to management.
  • Participating in routine departmental operations in a timely and productive manner, i.e., management reports, public bid openings, and contract maintenance.
  • Actively participating in long-term planning.

  • Strive to develop professional skills that result in more efficient performance by:
  • Keeping up with technological and market development within a divisional assignment.
  • Adding to knowledge of business law and related subjects; develop specific knowledge of State, University, UW Medicine, and departmental policies and procedures.

  • Departmental Expectations:
  • Work within the procedures and policy guidelines established by the Manager of Acquisitions and System Director Strategic Sourcing, Supply Chain Management, UW Medicine.

  • Represent UW Medicine, Strategic Sourcing, Supply Chain Management, and the purchasing profession at all times.
  • REQUIREMENTS: One year of experience as a professional-level buyer AND either an Associate of Arts Degree in purchasing management or a Bachelor's Degree; OR an equivalent combination of work experience and college-level training.
