The Laboratory Medicine department has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time, first shift, CLINICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN 1. The Clinical Laboratory Technician performs the pre-analytic laboratory procedures of specimen collection and specimen processing. This involves interpreting provider test orders, prioritizing specimen handling based on specimen type and clinical urgency, monitoring requisitions and labels for accuracy and investigating/documenting errors and incomplete orders. This individual will extract DNA, operate molecular laboratory equipment, and enter data. Additionally, the person in this role will maintain a clean work area and validate results if necessary.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Collects blood specimens from patients of all ages, either venous or capillary collections, gives them directions on how to collect non-blood specimens and may perform point-of care-testing and quality control procedures
Handles telephone inquiries from staff and providers
Represents the Department of Laboratory Medicine and UW Medicine and plays an important role in promoting our mission, values and goal of service excellence and patient safety
Performs work accurately and precisely and can organize the workload to meet the service demands, calmly and efficiently
Performs phlebotomy on adult and pediatric patients and can easily draw between 25 and 35 patients a day
Performs point of care testing on patients accurately and efficiently, providing them results prior to their appointment with their provider
Uses excellent customer service skills, follows AIDET, and UW Medicine Service Culture Guidelines
Prepares and processes specimens for transport or testing, including data entry
Exhibits a working knowledge of the lab information systems, including Sunquest and EPIC, and can problem solve ordering errors of both systems
Appropriately notifies lead tech or supervisor if a problem or issue arises where assistance is necessary
Maintains a congenial and professional working relationship with co-workers, clinical technologists, and supervisors
May need to work in other departmental locations in order to meet patient service demands, i.e. UWMC-Roosevelt, Summit Cardiology, Hall Health Labs
Participates in demonstrating and training routine phlebotomy and other laboratory techniques to students and new employees
Performs related duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:
High school graduation or equivalent AND one year of chemical, clinical, or public health laboratory experience
OR
completion of a laboratory assistant course approved by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists
OR
equivalent education/experience.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
It will be necessary to work in other departmental locations in order to meet patient service requirements, especially at Harborview Medical Center. In addition, less frequent work effort will be required at other UW School of Medicine locations (e.g., South Lake Union) and Seattle-area healthcare institutions.
Will be considered essential staff and as such will be required to report to work when scheduled despite inclement weather.
Must be able to meet with all shifts on a regular basis
