The Department of Laboratory Medicine serves as a regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for patient care, research and educational programs in laboratory medicine. Our Laboratory Medicine department has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time (100%), evening shift, CLINICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN 1. At a semi-technical level, perform simple laboratory collection associated with venipunctures and capillary blood collection from patients, testing and/or prepare specimens for laboratory testing and performs other laboratory work which supports the operation of a clinical laboratory.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Sort and prioritize initial specimens and requests, receive specimens via pneumatic tube system and at the front window
Match specimens against requisitions for appropriate tube type
Centrifuge and aliquot appropriate specimen type and quantity as ordered
Process timed urine collections: add preservatives, measure, aliquot, etc.
Assist in orientation, training and support of new employees
Refer testing to other laboratories as procedurally necessary
Maintain complete, accurate, legible records
Clean work area at least once each shift
Answer telephones, intercom and window reception in a courteous and professional manner
Perform computer functions required for completion of tasks: data entry, printing, worksheets, reports, result inquiry
Respond to inquiries concerning patient lab values, reference ranges, specimen requirements, procedures, time required for tests and preparation of specimens to outside labs for analysis
Resolve specimen or order-related problems
Perform computer functions required for completion of tasks: data entry of patient information and tests requested, printing, worksheets, reports, result inquiry, etc.
Attend division and department staff meetings
Promote and contribute to the development of teamwork in the service and working relationships between the laboratory and other departments
Complete compliance, safety and other training relevant to job functions as assigned
REQUIREMENTS:
High school graduation or equivalent
AND
One year of chemical, clinical, or public health laboratory experience OR completion of a laboratory assistant course approved by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists
OR
Equivalent education/experience.
DEPARTMENT REQUIREMENTS:
Completion of a phlebotomy course
Medical Assistant - Phlebotomy (MA-P) certification with the WA State Department of Health
DESIRED:
Associates or bachelor degree in science
Experience in a major medical hospital laboratory
Experience with laboratory information system
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
May be required to work holidays and weekends
Lab Medicine employees are considered essential staff and as such are required to report to work during inclement weather
Lab Medicine employees may be required to work in any of the department locations including but not limited to HMC, UWMC, Roosevelt, SCCA, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, SCH, etc.
