The Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Clinical Operations Financial Analyst. The purpose of this position is to provide investigation, analysis and reporting on clinical operational finances for the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine. They will also manage portions of the annual budgeting process.  This position will review and analyze business processes as requested and provide recommendations for improvement. The Director of Finance and Administration will off-load projects to this individual, ensuring the Director has appropriate time to spend on planning, strategy and process improvements at a strategic level. This individual will report directly to the Director of Finance and Administration.

Typical work may include: clinical financial data analysis; monitoring departmental and divisional clinical revenue reports and related information; supporting the Director in monitoring trends and developing financial models.  They will produce reports and analysis to assist with physician compensation models.  This position will assist in developing, tracking and monitoring faculty clinical commitment and wRVUs reports.

Work may include development of specific project proposals related to operational improvements as requested by the Chair or Director, providing necessary reports regarding departmental financial performance.

Major duties of this position fall into three categories:
  • Financial Analysis & Reporting = 50%
  • Financial Data Review and Management = 30%
  • Operational Process Improvement = 20%

    The complexities of this position revolve around the complexities of clinical financing and clinical operational processes.  Clinical Departments have multiple sources of money that flow into them. Similarly, the uses of funds is complicated.  A myriad of compliance concerns accompany all financial transactions within a large academic medical center and each of these sources and uses of funds has rules around how, when and for what the money can be used.   Individuals who analyze and make recommendations on funds flow must be knowledgeable of the rules, guidelines and conventions.  The individual in this position must be able to provide guidance to managers and administrators and through analysis and reporting, assist the Associate Director and Director in their overall management of the Departments’ clinical finances. They will assist in finding, analyzing and recommending solutions to issues that may be developing.

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
    Details Of Major Job Duty & percentage of time:  Financial Analysis & Reporting
  • Analyze financial data to make projections and problem-solve;
  • Accurately identify arising financial issues through solid analysis of data;
  • Use/design/refine reporting tools to present financial information in a meaningful format for senior management decision making;
  • Provide analysis and support implementation of faculty clinical commitment and semi-annual Incentive Distribution;
  • Provide financial decision support when preparing offers for new faculty recruitments;
  • Provide decision support to Director and Chair when negotiating hospital support;
  • Serve as analyst/project manager on specific projects assigned by the Chair and Director;
  • Provide support and management of clinical budgeting process;
  • Understand and apply knowledge of appropriate use of various sources of departmental funds;
  • Ensure that financial reporting is completed accurately and distributed in a timely manner;

    Details Of Major Job Duty & percentage of time: Data Review and Management:
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date data files, including databases and shared server folder files;
  • Work with Director to prepare and implement annual UWP and CUMG clinical budgets;
  • As directed, review with Division Managers, their clinical budgets, ensuring understanding and “next steps”;
  • On a monthly basis, review budget to actual reports and make recommendations for change as necessary;
  • Assist with preparation of the hospital support annual budget;
  • Understand hospital budgeting methodology and nuances in order to provide rationale to assist Director in preparing hospital financial requests;
  • Under direction of the Director, manage the hospital support agreements, including monitoring funds flow and ensuring funds are allocated properly;
  • Contribute to school-wide financial reports such as the METER report;
  • Assure that funding policies are well-understood and assist with creation and implementation;
  • Providing quality controls and consistency in data analysis and reporting;

    Details Of Major Job Duty & percentage of time: Clinical Operational Process Improvement
  • Assist in producing trainings in financial processes and reports as necessary;
  • Work to develop and/or update financial and clinical operational policies;
  • Provide analytic support and recommendations in regards to long-term financial planning;

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
    Education: BA in Business, Finance, Healthcare Administration, Statistical Analysis or similar
    Type and Years of Experience: 2-3 years’ experience working in finance, accounting or similar; Minimum 2 years’ experience in finance budgeting or similar and 1 year data analysis

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master’s in Healthcare Administration, Business or similar
  • Previous work in an academic medical center
  • Previous work in a clinical department
  • Understanding of compliance issues related to multiple funding sources in a clinical department
