The Division of Hematology in the Department of Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Clinical Research Scientist.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate patient tissue sample acquisition and storage from enrolled subjects.  Samples may originate from University of Washington Hospital, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance Clinics, Seattle Children’s Hospital, and facilities outside of the University of Washington system.  This will include sample processing in the laboratory (e.g., isolate and store cells, RNA and DNA).  Design sample storage system to organize and track samples in the laboratory and manage sample inventory.
  • Design and maintain electronic database registry of phenotypic and natural history data from inherited blood disorder patient samples collected for this research.  This position will access University of Washington electronic medical record systems to retrieve patient data as detailed in the protocol and coordinate acquisition of medical records from patients outside of our facility for data extraction and entry into database.   
  • Coordinate regulatory submissions of Human Subjects applications and revisions related to human research studies.
  • Basic science laboratory bench work expected as project advances.  This will include molecular biology work (including western blots, quantitative RT-PCR, PCR) and cell culture techniques and functioning as a laboratory manager of a small research laboratory.

    REQUIREMENTS:

  • BA/BS in a biological science or health related field AND experience as a Research Study Coordinator or Research Scientist.

    Additional Requirements:
  • Institutional Review Committee/Human Subjects experience (i.e., Human Subjects Research training).
  • Flexible work schedule.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, experience with Microsoft Excel.
  • Human Subject and Good Clinical Practice training will be required to complete it within 5 days of hire if not already completed. 
  • Enjoys working independently (this position requires extensive independent work).
  • Laboratory bench experience including knowledge of molecular biology techniques and cell culture methods or interest in learning these skills.

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

  • Highly motivated and energetic applicant who will maintain professionalism under potentially stressful situations.
  • Previous experience with database development and maintenance and in particular with REDCap database.
  • Familiarity with medical terms, diagnostic studies, and laboratory studies valued.
  • Previous experience working with Hematology patients.
  • Previous experience conducting research in a hospital or academic setting.
  • Familiarity with ORCA/Epic systems
