The Department of Patient Revenue Cycle at the UW School of Dentistry supports dental/medical coding, billing and collection activity for patients treated by students and faculty at 13 dental clinics on campus and off-site clinics and medical centers. We employ a team-oriented approach to provide excellent customer service to patients – and to provide training and coding/billing support to School of Dentistry students, faculty, and staff.
The Coding Specialist 2 assigns coding for services performed in the Departments of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Radiology, Oral Health Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry - and services provided by other medical and dental providers at the School of Dentistry. Additional coding service areas include Harborview and UW Medical Centers, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, and other off-site School of Dentistry locations. Principle function is to review provider documentation of services and assign correct Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes, and Current Dental Terminology (CDT) codes. The Coding Specialist 2 also serves as a resource for coding training and education for providers and staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Abstract pertinent details from reports/records and assign CPT, CDT and ICD codes to ensure accurate and timely reimbursement. This requires a proficient and competent understanding of medical terminology and anatomy to assist in selection of appropriate procedure and diagnosis codes.
- Review documentation of services for evidence of and level of attending physician personal involvement for Medicare patients. Assure that entries in the electronic health record reflect proper documentation and coding standards for quality control and conformance with Medicare, Medicaid, and other pertinent rules and regulations.
- Contact responsible providers in a professional, tactful manner, if coding clarification is necessary.
- Maintain a working knowledge of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and insurance/payer guidelines to assure use of correct coding policies and guidelines.
- Maintain a strong working knowledge of Correct Coding Initiative (CCI) edits.
- Serve as a key information resource and respond to queries associated with coding and related billing issues.
- Maintain coding production quotas and 95% coding accuracy rate.
- Update and process coding tracking queues in a timely matter
