The Department of Environmental and Occupational Health has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Community Engagement Manager to build upon and add to existing relationships between two long-standing UW environmental health research programs and local communities, particularly in South Seattle and with local Native Tribes.
WHO WE ARE: The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) funds two closely-related, long-running interdisciplinary programs housed in the UW Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences aimed at improving environmental and public health through research, research translation and community engagement. These are the UW Interdisciplinary Center for Exposures, Diseases, Genomics & Environment (EDGE) and the Superfund Research Program (SRP). Combined, the two groups are comprised of over 100 leaders in their field, including members of the National Academy of Sciences, Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and recipients of countless other scientific awards and honors. Their research improves environmental and public health across the globe as well as in diverse local communities. The manager of community engagement will work closely with these researchers and a small team of faculty and staff who are dedicated to engaging various community groups with science that’s relevant for them and also to helping direct research toward the concerns of affected communities.
WHO WE’D LIKE YOU TO BE: Ideally, you are a person who thrives on engaging people with science that has the potential to improve their lives. You know how to tailor technical information for diverse audiences. You bring energy to a stage. You respect the need for integrity and accountability when doing work in community and in partnership. You enjoy working collaboratively, particularly with people who may have different perspectives and experiences than your own. You have the project management and communication skills to be the public face of two important UW research programs. It would be an advantage if you were a person who also had existing contacts within South Seattle in areas adjacent to the Lower Duwamish Waterway and/or local tribal communities.

Develop strategic plan to connect and sustain relationships with key partners
•Sustain and build the Northwest Toxics Community Coalition (NWTCC) membership through attendance at regional meetings, serving on coalition project teams, frequent telephone/webinar and in-person networking, and development and implementation of strategic community engagement plans.
•Develop and respond to funding opportunities including initial funding research, assembling partnerships, and writing and submitting the grant.Prepare reports and articles to communicate progress of projects to various internal and external stakeholders.
•Work with Research Translation Core in developing environmental education materials or workshops including identifying relevant and key topics consistent with the Superfund Research Program outreach mission; develop content and work with graphic art team and other staff to design, write, and disseminate materials in multiple languages, particularly for communities impacted by contamination in the Lower Duwamish Waterway.
