The Allen School has an outstanding opportunity for a CSE Lab Helpdesk Assistant.
The CSE Lab Helpdesk Assistant (Computer Support Technician I) is a member of the UW Computer Science Laboratory at the Allen School. The Computer Science Laboratory’s technical team shares in the responsibility of providing the Allen School community with technology and technology support services. These services and support include round-the-clock, dedicated research, instructional, and administrative computing and engineering support for approximately 1800 full-time students and 200 full-time faculty and staff members in the School.
The CSE Lab Help Desk Assistant is part of the Service Desk team within the Lab, and is responsible for providing first level technical support to ensure that customer requests and questions are resolved or answered in a timely and professional manner. This position is also responsible for helping maintain the efficient operation of the following client support areas: Allen Center Helpdesk, Allen Center Technical Workroom, Gates Center Helpdesk, and policies and procedures related to the operation of those areas. The ability to interact effectively with individuals with a diverse range of technical skills, triage incoming technical requests, and manage daily priorities is critical. The person in this position must effectively and frequently interact with non-technical staff and students about technical issues, and with faculty and quarterly instructors. The CSE Lab Help Desk Assistant will report to the Allen School IT Director.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Serve as initial point of technical contact in the UW Computer Science Laboratory by providing excellent customer service in navigating the Allen School’s wide array of technical services and systems. Working under general supervision, typical duties will include the following:
• Perform preliminary troubleshooting and diagnosis of problems related to desktop and portable device operating systems (Windows, Linux and Mac), printer malfunctions, basic networking issues, basic account permissions-related issues, as well as software and hardware component compatibility issues. Resolve simple or “Tier 1” technical problems and escalating more complex problems to appropriate staff.
• Respond to technical service requests and inquiries from Allen School faculty, staff, and students by phone, email, and in-person communication, regarding software, hardware, and network issues.
• Train part-time student employees in various operating procedures, and provide ongoing mentoring and monitoring to support success.
• Maintain inventories of computer equipment. Update technology asset records in existing asset database and phone database.
• Maintain other various Allen School technology resources (e.g. printers, loaner equipment, AV in various meeting rooms).
• Occasionally responsible for placing service calls to printer vendors and various manufacturers for in-warranty system repairs, and then managing response (communication, scheduling and access) around vendor warranty repair visits.
• Write and maintain relevant Technical Support/Helpdesk documentation for customers and internal users.
• Assist in receiving, storing, and maintaining computer supplies inventory, identifying and alerting others when supplies need to be replenished.
• Install and configure software on new and existing computer desktop systems.
• Identify, resolve, and assist computer users in the general use and problems of various software packages.
• Other duties as may be assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• One year of experience involving the use of computerized information systems OR equivalent education/experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Familiarity with computer hardware such as desktops/laptops, and associated peripherals such as printers, copiers, scanners and projectors
• Effective and accurate data entry and keyboarding skills
• Familiar with the use of email, spreadsheets, word processing, and internet systems.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills. Proven ability to write clear electronic mail messages with a positive tone, correct grammar and punctuation, and follow standards when applicable.
• Effective customer service skills
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team to problem solve, take initiative, and meet deadlines while representing the mission, vision and values of the UW Computer Science Laboratory.
• Positive, optimistic, success-oriented attitude
• Highly organized and detail-oriented
DESIRED:
• Of the experience above, at least six (6) months of work experience involving customer interaction, preferably in an office or business setting.
• High School Diploma, or GED Certificate; OR one year of relevant work experience, OR applicable training
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
• Must be physically capable of lifting and moving 25 pounds on a regular basis
• Must be able to bend, stoop, and navigate throughout two Allen School buildings and to other locations on the Seattle campus as needed
• Must be available to work Monday through Friday, in an 8-hour shift that contains the Lab hours of 9am to 5pm. Must have the flexibility to infrequently work overtime as requested to support critical or urgent technical support needs.
Equivalent education/experience can substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
