UWMC's Environmental Services department has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time, day shift, CUSTODIAN. Under general supervision, the individual in this position will perform routine waste management duties, including check and replaces all sharps and chemotherapy waste containers in soiled utility room and other areas as required.

  • Perform routine activity of picking up and replaces all soiled linens, soiled municipal, and regulated medical waste carts on the unit
  • Routinely picking up sharps, Chemotherapy and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) waste containers, RX Destroyer bins in a designated areas and replaces all soiled linens, soiled municipal, and regulated medical waste carts on the unit
  • Handling regulated medical waste and processes it in the sterilizer machine
  • Pick up all recyclables, compostable material pick up cardboard and processes it in a cardboard baler machine
  • Follow written and/or verbal instructions regarding the use of chemicals, supplies and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures
  • Report need for repair and/or maintenance
  • May operate high-pressure washer
  • Perform related duties as required

  • Competitive candidates for this position will exhibit clear and concise communications skills, both verbal and written
  • At least six months of experience in waste management
  • Have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and be able to handle 2 heavy (up to 800 lbs) trash or soiled linen carts
  • Ability to work under stress in a busy and potentially hazardous environment
