The UW Center for Public Health Nutrition (CPHN), located in the School of Public Health and Department of Health Services, has an opportunity for part-time and full-time temporary Data Collectors to conduct in-person store and restaurants audits. This is an important part of the work CPHN is doing with Public Health Seattle—King County to conduct an evaluation of the City of Seattle’s newly-passed sugary beverage tax. The evaluation includes conducting in-person audits of large and small grocery stores and restaurants to measure the availability and price of beverages. This includes stores and restaurants in Seattle, Kent, Auburn, and Federal Way.
Data Collectors will meet with the CPHN research team for in-person trainings prior to data collection, and will be in frequent contact with the research time throughout the data collection period.
Detailed job duties/responsibilities
Data Collection (95%):
• Travel to store and restaurant locations, and conduct a beverage availability and price audit. This includes meeting the store manager and asking for permission to survey the store.
• Collect data in an electronic form on a tablet.
Communication and Team Meetings (5%):
• Attend weekly in-person or phone check-ins with CPHN research team
• Communicate data collection progress back to the CPHN research team on a weekly basis throughout the data collection period
• Reach out to CPHN research staff as data collection questions arise while conducting surveys
Minimum Requirements:
• Two years of college-level course work in a relevant academic area AND one year of related experience OR equivalent education/experience.
• Strong communication skills
• Strong organizational skills
• Feeling comfortable approaching store managers to explain the project and ask for permission to survey stores
• Experience using tablets or smart phones; an understanding of how tablets/smart phones work and comfortable troubleshooting with these devices
• Comfortable navigating and driving within Seattle and to Federal Way/Auburn/Kent
• A valid driver’s license. After hire, a successful completion of UW Fleet Services Basic Driver Training will be required to operate University Vehicles.
Desired Qualifications:
• Experience collecting data
• Experience working in a customer service setting or with clients (Data Collectors will be the face for CPHN in the community)
• Bilingual or multiple languages (store/restaurant owners and managers speak a variety of languages)
• Experience working with diverse communities
Conditions of Employment:
• Visiting the stores will require either using a personal vehicle for travel, or using the UW U-Cars. Travel time between stores is included in the work day, and mileage reimbursement is provided for those using their personal vehicles.
