The School of Dentistry, Department of Oral Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Dental Assistant 2 in our DECOD (Dental Education in Care of Persons with Disabilities) Clinic. The DECOD clinic is a major resource for Washington citizens who have developmental or acquired disabilities. The goal is to improve oral health and contribute to the well-being and oral function of clinic patients. Our clinic is not only friendly but works as a team with caregivers, family members and medical staff to provide the best oral health care to our patients.
DECOD provides dental care that is not otherwise available in the community for patients with developmental and acquired disabilities. Clinical services include diagnostic, emergency, and comprehensive dental and oral health care services. The successful candidate will Assist in the treatment of patients with disabilities and special health care needs and/or assist with patients in off-site outreach programs as well as on-site. Assist with oral care services for people with physical, medical, developmental, or cognitive conditions which limit their ability to receive routine dental care. Assist with physical and mechanical supports needed for patients to receive dental care safely in the clinic setting. Apply medical immobilization and protective stabilization devices as directed by dental providers. Assist with behavioral supports as directed by dental providers.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform expanded dental assistant duties, including: take impressions and opposing models for bridge work; mechanical polishing to amalgam restorations, clinical crowns and supragingival areas; place matrix and wedge; remove excess cement, fabricate, place and remove temporary fillings; expose and process dental x-ray film; give fluoride treatments; teach oral hygiene; remove dry socket dressing and periodontal pak, remove sutures; pack and medicate extraction areas; assist in the administration of nitrous-oxide analgesia; placement of retraction cord; select denture shade and mold; acid etch and apply sealants; place cotton rolls and holders; other duties as provided in the dental laws of the State of Washington.
Take and record vital signs. Review health history with patients, caregivers and guardians. Assist with documentation in patients’ electronic health records. Participate in quality assurance and quality improvement for clinic and off-site/outreach programs. Take, process and mount radiographs (including digital radiographs) such as pan, lateral jaw xrays, other extra oral and intraoral images, individual x-rays of the full mouth, periapicals, occlusals.
Instruct students in the appropriate role of dental assistants and dental assisting techniques in the delivery of patient care; assist in various four-handed techniques, such as anesthetic administration; experience in OR sterilization and instrument assessment for the rooms. Orient new staff and students regarding clinic procedures and policies;
May coordinate support activities in a dental clinic, such as arranging and
scheduling patient appointments, assigning patients to students/trainees,
maintaining patient records; Order and maintain inventory of supplies; record
research data; May provide information to departments regarding clinic services; Orient new staff and students regarding clinic procedures and policies; Perform related duties as required.
Be able to travel to off-sites located in the King County Areas.
Perform related duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS
Completion of an accredited training program for dental assistants; AND current certification as a dental assistant (CDA) OR the ability to obtain same within six months; PLUS two years of experience as a dental assistant.
One year of additional dental assistant experience may substitute for required education. Registered with the State of Washington Dental Assistant Licensing Department.
DESIRED
Training with patients with disabilities or special health care needs or 6 months to 1 year experience with patients with disabilities or special needs, in oral health/dentistry or other fields.
