UW Medical Center - Northwest has an outstanding opportunity for a PART-TIME VARIABLE DAYS ULTRASONOGRAPHER. Under the direction of a radiologist, the Ultrasonographer performs diagnostic medical ultrasound examinations accurately, independently, and efficiently.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS)
1. Prepares patient and independently performs Ultrasound exams & procedures, includes but is not limited to:
• Using a professional, ethical, and caring demeanor, prepares and informs patients of exam procedure.
• Identifies patients properly using prescribed method.
• Verifies patient clinical history prior to exam. Evaluates and assesses the patient's condition based upon information from the referring physician, medical records, and patient interview; selects appropriate instrumentation for the exam.
• Assists physicians with special, interventional radiological procedures.
• Performs portable procedures including bedside, operating room, emergency room and other areas outside the Ultrasound suite.
• Transfers and positions patient safely and properly for examination.
• Observes and monitors patient’s condition and reactions to exam.
• Safety: Provides protection for patient, self, and other staff in accordance with prescribed safety standards and protective devices. Uses proper sterile technique.
• Independently performs Ultrasound examinations and procedures in accordance with established protocols and standards, including abdomen, OB/GYN, small parts, intra-operative, assisting Radiologist with invasive procedures, and vascular exams. Utilizes 2-D, real time, M-Mode, Pulsed Doppler, and color flow to maximize diagnostic information. Demonstrates ability to perform the entire variety of technical procedures expected of a Sonographer.
• Produces technically acceptable Ultrasound exams in accordance with departmental procedures. Selects proper technical factors. Reviews and evaluates Ultrasound images to determine that they are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes; assesses need for further views.
• Provides Radiologists with the requested information for each exam; assists Radiologists with problem-solving.
• Completes daily work in a timely fashion within exam time-window.
• Performs quality assurance checks on equipment and processes per department policies. Investigates and informs supervisor of any quality issues or problems.
• Assists supervisor to establish, update, and monitor protocols.
2. Operates, troubleshoots, maintains equipment, includes but is not limited to:
• Operates Ultrasound equipment according to departmental procedures. Adjusts image parameters as applicable for the exam.
• Uses systems effectively to evaluate and improve image quality.
• Performs scheduled maintenance on Ultrasound equipment and troubleshoots problems.
• Provides equipment vendor/contractor and/or supervisor with timely notification and documentation of equipment issues.
3. Documentation, includes but is not limited to:
• Prepares preliminary diagnosis / report for radiologist, including anatomic and physiological data and diagnostic observations.
• Uses RIS/PACS effectively to input/order/edit/cancel exams.
• Completes calculations and required paperwork and records. Accurately inputs exam orders, patient data, patient charges, and prepares reports.
• Effectively uses the computer and NWH software applications to access information.
4. Coordinates and optimizes customer service and workflow, includes but is not limited to:
• Continually evaluates patient flow and work assignments, makes necessary adjustments, and prioritizes work effectively.
• Exhibits excellent customer service skills with patients, physician office staff, coworkers, management, vendors, etc.
• In order to provide a high level of customer service and necessary coverage, all staff are required to answer phones; assist in other areas (such as order entry, image library, scheduling, patient transport); work weekends, other shifts, holidays or take call; and help co-workers with workload and projects.
5. Maintains environment, includes but is not limited to:
• Sets up exam rooms, ensuring all necessary equipment and supplies are ready.
• Inventories supplies and linens. Restocks rooms as needed.
• Cleans and tidies exam rooms, patient holding rooms, wait rooms, etc.
6. Training and Collaboration, includes but is not limited to:
• Assists with training and mentoring new personnel and students.
• Prepares and presents in-service education programs if assigned.
• Attends staff meetings and required in-services.
• Participates in departmental goals and performance improvement projects.
7. Lead Expectations (when assigned), includes but is not limited to:
• Acts as a resource; facilitates problem / issue resolution.
• Acts as an expert / Super User for equipment, technical problems.
• Helps train and orient students and new staff.
• Works with the Supervisor to review Quality Assurance and Control measures.
• Monitors workflow and expedites work completion.
• Solves routine operating problems. Communicates with Supervisor regarding extraordinary situations.
• Keeps supervisor informed of daily activities and any problems.
• Identifies potential safety hazards.
• Coordinates equipment repairs and troubleshoots supply problems.
• Makes recommendations regarding process improvement opportunities.
• Acts as a liaison with other departments, works on committees and task forces.
• Acts as a point person for communication between management and staff.
• Helps the supervisor find on-call or staff coverage during critical shortages.
• Assists management with interviewing applicants and provides input, as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
• Education Background
1. High school graduate or GED equivalent.
2. Completion of a 2 year or a 4 year program in Ultrasound that is accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Administration Branch of the American Medical Association, and includes a 12-month clinical internship (or equivalent program as determined by the Diagnostic Imaging Director).
• Licensure, Registration, Certification
1. Advanced Registry in the modality within 12 months of hire date
2. CPR or BLS is required, must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
3. Requires 30 CME credits every 3 years.
• Special Training/Skills
Able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on assigned unit/department.
• Work Experience
At least 1 year previous ultrasound experience, preferred.
• Physical Abilities
Able to move and position patients in a safe manner.
