The Michael G. Foster School of Business currently has an outstanding opportunity for a DIRECTOR OF MBA STRATEGIC CONSULTING PROGRAMS.
This position supports the experiential learning of Foster Master’s students, particularly those enrolled in the Full-Time and Evening MBA Programs as well as the Specialized Master’s portfolio. The position manages a system for sourcing and vetting suitable real-world, experiential learning projects with external companies, working with instructors and students to facilitate successful completion of these projects, and working with these same parties to accelerate student development. The position provides a key quality assurance role in experiential learning and also supports the collection, analysis, and reporting of data on experiential learning outcomes. Experiential learning is broadly recognized as a form of active learning that is essential to student development, particularly for MBA and Specialized Master’s students seeking to make meaningful contributions to companies and organizations following graduation. Having made project-based learning a core element of Foster Master’s programs, the School needs a reliable supply of strong projects which necessitates both constant, extensive regional outreach and an ongoing relationship with a stable of reliable project sponsors.
Duties and responsibilities:
30% - Develop, manage, and ensure successful completion of student project opportunities for the MBA core Applied Strategy course. This requires sourcing and developing suitable project options on which students will express preferences, leading to a final number of projects depending on cohort size and thus the number of teams in any given year. This position organizes an event where students meet client organizations to learn about projects, matches the teams to projects, and contributes to the orientation of students to this course. The position also works with the faculty member leading the Applied Strategy course to ensure successful completion of projects. This includes meeting with the faculty member and with student teams, providing coaching to teams to support the work of the faculty member, and providing feedback on practice presentations delivered by student teams to support the success of the projects. This position also helps coordinate the on-client site presentation schedule to ensure that the instructor, this position, or another appropriate Foster faculty or staff colleague is able to represent the School at each of the final presentations. This position provides “triage” services for external and campus stakeholders who contact the school with potential project proposals; the role decides whether such ideas can be shaped into projects which are appropriate for students in the Foster School of Business to undertake and, if appropriate, what part of the School’s experiential learning opportunities offer the greatest likelihood of alignment. The role then makes connections with the appropriate faculty and students. In cases where opportunities may be better served in other parts of the University, this position will try to help make that introduction. This position is responsible for ensuring payment by the client organization to the school, and managing the accounting and reporting of these revenues.
25% - Develop and manage a suitable number of MBA Field Study projects and manage all “application-based” independent studies pursued by individual students for course credit. Typically this includes up to 15 MBA Field Study projects and 40 Application-Based Independent Study projects. After sourcing a suitable number of MBA Field Study Projects, this position promotes project opportunities to students and hosts information sessions (in-person or virtual) for students to learn about potential projects and the company sponsors. The position manages project definition and scoping with the students in alignment with guidelines from the MBA Program Office as set by the Master’s Programs Committee and Associate Dean for Masters Programs and with the approval of the faculty advisor and sponsoring companies. This position secures faculty advisors for all Strategic Consulting Program-sourced Field Study projects and provides guidance to students in suggesting suitable faculty advisors for student-sourced projects. This position manages the operational aspects of project execution including reviewing Field Study assignments with faculty advisors. The position also conducts practice presentations with all teams and individual students in order to provide feedback on both content and presentation delivery. This position ensures that faculty advisors sign off on the project scope, provide input to student teams on request, suggest research resources and potential analyses, review and grade the final project work product, and submit student grades to the Registrar.
15%: Supervise staff. This position supervises a 1.0 FTE with dual-reporting responsibility to this role and directors in Specialized Master’s programs at Foster. This position plans and directs the work of that staff member, ensuring strong contributions to active learning in both MBA and Specialized Master’s programs as well as job satisfaction, development, and growth for the holder of the supervised role.
10%: Advise students. Meet with MBA students to discuss and advise on the experiential learning opportunities available at Foster including Field Study, Application-Based Independent Study, and project-based class offerings. This also includes reaching out to alumni and personal contacts to make connection for students.
10%: Coordinate Intra-Foster Experiential Learning Programming and Delivery. This position works with MBA Career Management as well as various centers within the school (principally the Buerk Center, Global Business Center, Center for Leadership and Strategic Thinking, and Consulting and Business Development Center) to develop or refer student project opportunities with specific companies or industries that can help create student opportunities in the areas served by these centers. This position also assists in helping the MBA Program Office, MBA Career Management, and student clubs and organizations in finding case competition judges, arranging various experiential learning activities and trips (including the Bay Area Tech Trek), and making other industry contacts to support MBA students. The role works with the Foster Advancement team to facilitate synergies in outreach efforts and identify companies, organizations, or individual alumni where a connection may, or already has been built through a student project opportunity.
5%: Represent the Foster School of Business and the UW in regional professional organizations and industry and civic events to identify and develop new project opportunities. This position serves as Foster’s primary representative at the annual Leaders of Experiential Project-Based Education (LEPE) conference and supports ongoing LEPE efforts throughout the year. The role speaks formally and informally regarding the Foster School's activities and goals in the area of project-based experiential learning and student work with companies and community organizations.
5%: Manage data and generate reports. This position collects, tracks, and analyzes data on contacts with client companies to help Foster develop and nurture a strong, growing portfolio of diverse project sponsors in a range of sizes, industries, and functional project options.
